I've been looking through the wonderful Haggate grave photos and the demolition ones of the chapel. I was taken there in the lae 60s as a child (I now know I have family buried there) Very atmospheric & well done all those involved.

I was at Haggate again yesterday. Nice to see that the place is being looked after. The grass had been recently cut and it all looked quite tidy.

I thought I had put this somewhere on the site, but cannot find it, so I am putting it on again ---here.
Haggate Chapel began as Scottish Baptists (or Particular Baptists) 1760 in a loft at Burwains Farm.
1st Chapel Haggate 1767
1st Birth recorded 1768
1st Burial 25th Feb 1786
There were a few burials prior to this date but they were relatives of William Smith the church leader.

Thanks for posting this information about Haggate Chapel's History.
Does anyone know in which library the Haggate Births and Marriage information is kept? I went to Nelson yesterday (I live in Lincolnshire, so regular visits are tricky) and looked through the microfiche records about the Haggate memorial stones. They largely confirmed what I already knew. Also struggling to find pre-1800 records for Worsthorne.
I am trying to find out more about William and Mally (Mary?) Watson both born around 1786 (I have found them and their
children in the Briercliffe records) and wish to go further back if possible.
The Scottish connection sounds particularly interesting. Is there any information about Watsons migrating from Scotland to Briercliffe? Perhaps from the Black Isle/Inverness region?

As far as I am aware, the church at Worsthorne wasn't built until about 1830.

Burnley library has Haggate records though it's perhaps wise to contact them before a visit to make sure they have the records for the years of interest to you. http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/libraries/ ... me=Burnley

I'm still a little ashamed how I failed to find the site of this entire building on my visit to the 'old' Cemetery. It is, after all, rather massive!

Judging by how close the railings look to the rear of the Chapel, I would say it was quite close to the road. I seem to remember there being a wall, maybe that was where the Chapel ended?

Now is the best time to return Stephen, before everything starts to grow again.

I did walk along a wall of sorts when last there...but it was other quite a drop. Seemed to be on the right as one would have once walked in through the padlocked gate (and up the steps). Ring any bells...?

I do intend to go again...it's just the making of time that troubles me!

Certainly changed over the years. I attended many times in the 1940's/50's with my great-aunt and uncle, Willie and Lizzie (Halstead) Mason. I remember it a bit further along the Road than where it is indicated on Googlemap.. (remember we walked in them thar days!)....We would walk from Queen Street up to Haggate and turn left onto the Halifax Road (I wasn't aware of the road's name then...I knew it as the road the bus went to go to Nelson Market), past the corner shop (which I later learned, on this website, was the original home/business of Robert Halstead my G-g-grandfather). The chapel yard had low wall with iron fence atop and an wrought iron gate.....steps up and a path through the graveyard to the front door. I used to love being up in the balcony....the music used to rattle around up there....I remember being gobsmacked the first time I saw a baptism! I'd be about 7 or 8. Thought it was very cruel....and I have a dim memory of myself telling anyone who would listen what I thought of that! (Probably much to the chagrin of my rather pious Auntie!)

I think some confusion may be being made here with regards to which version of Haggate Chapel we're talking about! The most recent building (with the 'path through the graveyard') was demolished about ten years ago (c2001?) I believe. The one which has the photo linked to a few posts above was the 'old' (and first, c1767) chapel. It was situated in the old part of the graveyard and was abandoned when, presumably, the newer chapel was built in 1866.
