Indeed, I didn't. I went in the end, and returned with only the usual amount of scratches, bruises and cuts. Found a couple of gravestones that didn't seem to have been looked at before. Also found a couple of more interesting objects, and have had more of a think about the location of the 1767/1867 Chapel. Photos soon, no doubt! |

Wonderful, glad you made it. I was looking on street view yesterday but the bottom end of the graveyard wasn't quite clear enough to make anything out. |

Just been looking through the photos I took today (all 139 of them!) and have noticed there are at least two tombstones I found and photographed that haven't been previously recorded. One is Calvert and one is Holt. There are possibly some more, too. Would you like me to zip up what I've photographed and send them all over to you Mel, or would you rather I checked them first against what's already on the site? In query mode, I was brambling through what most commentators seem to believe to be the site of the old (1767-1867) chapel, when I came upon the two attached objects buried in the ground. As they were the only non-bramble things there, I dug them up and took the attached photos. I noticed that there are a large amount of both objects stacked up around the site of the 'new' (1867-2001?) Chapel, but these two seem to me to be of different size. Thus my question is: what are they? and also, are they likely to be from the first chapel as opposed to the 'new' one? Can't see how they'd have got from the 'new' site to the overgrown 'old' site, mind...

Zip and send please Stephen. I doi have lots of images that I have not yet added that Kris and I took a couple of years ago when we were there. Adding them is quick enough, it's transcribing the stone that takes the time (and is needed seeing as I shrink the images but also for a, hopefully, better search engine result) |

That's where I'm confused. None of the graves in the 'old' Cemetery have such edgings still extant. Also, in the 'new' cemetery, at the back of the now demolished 1867/2005 Chapel, are the two mounds (attached). One contains slightly different versions of the flat panel, and the other contains different versions of the chimney-pot/cross thingummy. I had assumed they were something to do with the chapel that were removed before demolition or something? Also, am indeed confused as to why the examples I found on the site of the old church would be buried so deep in the ground if all of the others were neatly stacked and out in the daylight!

There has been quite a bit of tidying up in the new part in recent years which is why they are stacked...last time I was there they were piled up rather than neat. The old part hadn't been touched when I was last there....I think nature took it's course and swallowed quite a few stones and edgings. I think I have an image somewhere of some of these in place. From what I have seen when these stones are undisturbed, they would mark the boundaries of a grave and seemed to be used when people could not afford a gravestone. Perhaps it helped them to find the right place easier? I have rarely seen them used with a gravestone. |
