I have found a foundation stone lying at the side of the East Lancs railway. The inscription on it reads "This stone was laid by Mr W Robinson of Briercliffe June 25th 1910" Does anyone know which building it came from? It is possibly from a building which has been demolished in the last 10 to 15 years. Pwayman Sorry about the duplicate posts. I was trying to post initially whilst logging on at the same time. I attach a picture of the stone which has now been abandoned at the side of the railway..

Elim Methodist on Briercliffe Rd/Melville St in Burnley, or rather the associated school, I'm pretty sure. From the Burnley Express, 29 June (25th was a Saturday), as follows. Laying of foundation stones of new school, the chapel bottom being insufficient for the large numbers of scholars (450, with 34 teachers). To have lecture hall for 300 people, and 7 or 8 classrooms. 11 stones laid in all ; one is by Mr T Robinson of the C.E. Society (Church of England ?). It doesn't agree perfectly, but I think it is the only foundation laying reported in that edition. The modern Briercliffe Rd Methodist church seems to be in the same spot as the old that I remember (1950s/1960s). They might like the stone back ! [Old one demolished 1999, according to Genuki] Rex |

PS In the 1911 census, in Briercliffe, is to be found Thomas ROBINSON, Professor of Singing !!! Seems a likely candidate. Rex |

Does this help. When the chapel was demolished some of the stones were sold off to help pay for the new building. PB150031AC.jpg [ 20.39 KiB | Viewed 12169 times ] |
