Has anyone got an image of the original plaque on the Primitive Methodist Chapel Brierfield (now the Powerhouse Gym). The inscription appears to have been deliberately removed but at a guess is "may" read "Primitive Methodists Est 1861". Why do people do this sort of thing?

There is a photo of it on GENUKI but it looks like the plaque has been removed then. It might be worth contacting Brierfield Llibrary.

Thanks Gloria. I have contacted the community history section at Nelson library. They do hold a photograph of the Chapel prior to the loss of detail but say it requires the use of a magnifying glass to make the inscription out. I will have a look as soon as possible.

I wonder what these people get out of such mindles vandalism? I also wonder if they ever feel regret or remorse in later years when they perhaps outgrow their rebelious years

For all those people who may have been as curious as me as to what inscription was actually written on the plaque it will come as no surprise it was..

Primitive Methodist Chapel 1866.

The Chapel was closed in 1955.

My apologies for the quality of the image but the original photo detail was less than 1/4 of an inch diameter.
