Briercliffe-with-Extwistle

is a township in the parish and rural deanery of Whalley, Manchester diocese, Burnley Union and county court district, and is situated about three miles north-east from Burnley. The Church of St James, erected in 1840, is a stone edifice in the lancet style of architecture; it has nave, aisles, chancel and spire. The living is a perpetual curacy in the gift of the Hulme Trustees. the Rev. W. S. Hoole, M.A., of Brazenose College, Oxford, is the present vicar. The Acreage is 4,180. Population in 1861, 1,332; in 1871, 1,263.

Sarah Sutcliffe at Yeomans was my 4x Gt Grandmother. She died in the early 1870's

Valuable resources, Mel. These will tie in well with the Census Project.

Things are tricky with that at the moment. Matching 1891 locations and residents to 1881 ones is haaaard!

Partly because road 'names' change a lot between '81 and '91, and also partly because an awful lot of people seem to move house between the two years.

Mine seemed to move house a lot in Briercliffe from one census to the next. I wonder if the house owner was also the employer of the weavers-----Roger would probably be able to answer that one.
