The Reynolds Newspaper Sunday 30 September 1894 Women - Their ways and Doings Boer Courtship. A curious custom among Boers is the "op-sitting," Which forms a recognised part of the courtship. The Boer rides to the house of his loved one, and, having obtained the consent of her parents, sits up or op-sits, with his affianced when all the family have retired to rest. A candle is supplied to the lovers. So long as it burns he may woo her, but as soon as the candle burns out they must part. This Boer custom would prove rather a "bore" to English women. |

Poisonous Sweets It is about time that it became somebody's business to examine the sweetstuffs sold daily to our little ones. If half the truth were known about the stuff used in their manufacture, mothers would take care that sweets should only be purchased at a cost allowing a fair margin for profit. Caramels are made of glucose, starch, and fat imported from America, while paraffin wax is used to impart the necessary "substance." Common glue is used for the French jellies and jujubes. Most of those sweets are coloured with aniline dyes, which are very poisonous. The well-known "acid drop" of our childhood's days now owes it's much-appreciated sharpness to alum, or sometimes to what is much worse, acetic acid. French nougat is largely composed of glue, starch, glucose, worm-eaten nuts, and plaster of paris! |

Many of the "toilet" shops in Bond-street and other West-end resorts would have to put up their shutters if deprived of their male customers. Paint, powder, perfumes, dyes, creams for the complexion, and washes for hair and moustache, are among the more innocent of the purchases of these dandies. Manicure sets to trim their dainty finger nails, irons for waving and curling that exquisite moustache, which, by the way, must be dyed to the latest fashionable tint of reddish brown, scented sachets to fasten inside his coat, perfumed cachous wherewith to sweeten his breath — all these and many other items of toilet trickery form part of the indispensable "get up" of our modern day "man (?) of Society." It reminds of the old doggrel— A dandy is a thing which would Be a lady if it could; But since it can't, does all it can To show the world it's not a man! |

Same source as above EAU DE COLOGNE INEBRIATES. Dangerous, indeed, is the habit, so often indulged in, of taking "just a sip" of eau-de-Cologne to "brighten the eyes," give a "touch of colour," or polish the teeth of the young damsel bent on conquest. Nothing could be more pernicious than the taste thus fostered. It is highly prevalent amoung women of the upper idle classes. The dose is gradually increased, until the stuff can be taken a wineglassful at a time, and the craving still returns unsatisfied. Eau-de-Cologne alcoholism is among the most difficult forms of inebriations to cure. Not only is it made of immature and impure alcohol, but it contains large quantities of essential oils, which are deadly poison. |

Quite a few years ago we went on a coach trip to Italy. One older lady used to dab a dab behind each ear then take a swig. Much to the amusement of the rest of the coach, to which she was totally oblivious. |

The Reynolds Newspaper Sunday 30 September 1894 Women - Their ways and Doings Marriage by Weekly Payments "The Bachelor's Ready Marriage Club" is an organization now in process of formation in New York. The club is designed for the purpose of providing the necessary cash for any member who desires to be married and is nt in funds. Each member pays 6s. a week into the treasury. If there are fifty members, this means an income of £20 a week. Suppose that at the end of five weeks one of the fifty wants to marry. He draws out £70, and indulges in a bride, furnished flat, and a short honeymoon. |

As you value your good looks, do not go about in thin garments now that something warmer is required. Blue noses, streaky complexions, and watery eyes, are neither comfortable not becoming, and are the resulf of cold. If you wish to be lovely, be comfortable. If your skin is soft and prettily tinted, keep it so, by wearing clothes sufficiently warm, instead of trying to harden yourself to east winds, and thereby catching an influenza cold. |
