I've received a query regarding the above pub - does anyone know when it was built? I had a look in Rogers book but could not find anything that gave a date. Gloria/Maureen - didn't one of those documents refer to the pub? I don't suppose you can remember any if the information? I have replied to the gentleman and told him that I will phone Roger but wondered if any of you know. |

Wasn't the original pub one of the cottages at the side? I seem to remember Roger saying something about it when we were on the car park at the beginning. |

To be honest Mel I'm not sure what the documents related to - they were so long-winded and I was too fascinated to see reference to a Leaver and a Pickles that I know are on our tree. I was hoping to ask Mr Parker whether he had a transcription or whether he would bring them again and let me do it. |

Doesn't help in establishing the date of the original building, but John Leaver (b 1794) was the innkeeper in 1851. In 1841 it was Henry Crabtree b c1801. Before that I guess we need some old maps. |

I think I've only ever seen him at one other meeting. I saw two documents, one of them related to land opposite the pub and the other I think was to the pub. Gloria, do you have an email address for the younger man that was with him? They are related aren't they? There is certainly a similarity in their features. I have a feeling that I have an email address for him but it's on the broken computer....maybe a job for the afternoon. There is other stuff on there that I could do with. |

I think I've seen him a couple of times. The younger man with him was his nephew and I've seen him more often with (I think) his brother. |

The original Roggerham Gate Inn was across the road, it is still there as a house at the bottom of the track which goes to Lea Green. It is to be seen on here to the left of the Roggerham as you look at the pic. http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/Pho ... 20Inn1.htm |

RGI was run by William Haigh (1813-82), alias 'Butty O' Reuben's (don't know what Butty means but Reuben Haigh was his father), sometime in the mid 1830's. He married Mary Armistead (1812-80) of Sabden in 1835 and I think they moved to Roggerham a couple of years later (c.1837). This would be before the present RGI was built. I don't think they stayed long as they kept the Cragg Vale Inn (Hinchliffe Arms) in 1841 after moving there from farming at Turley Holes, Cragg. |

I have found a reference to Rogram Gate as a tavern and/or public house on the 1869 Slaters Directory for Lancashire. Abraham Sagar is the man listed as running the pub. Gilly |
