'Craven Heifer' is a common enough pub name in and around NE Lancs (and Craven !)

My ancester Richard Watson was publican at the Cop Row version in 1876. I guess it goes back to about 1820 when the cottages were built.

Craven Heifer, (Falcon) 17 Holden Street
The house was originally an unnamed beerhouse of the 1860’s, run by Peter Hargreaves. Peter Hargreaves was charged under breaches of the Beer Act in 1863. His trial was recorded in the Burnley Advertiser, 18 June 1863: “Breach of the Beer Act. Peter Hargreaves was charged with serving beer to persons in his house at five minutes past one o’clock on Monday morning. Fined 10s. and costs”.

The inn is fittingly named after a cow, for this area was long known as the “Meadows” and still is by many local residents. Also close by is Cow Lane, as a reminder of when it really was meadowland. The original address of the pub was No. 17 Holden Street (a reminder of the time when the front door was in this street) though today it is No. 1 Whittam street. The inn is not named as such in the early 1880’s, but it was the home of beer-sellers Thomas and Martha Nutter. The landlord here in 1945 was Thomas Martin, who later went on to the Yorkshire Hotel. The pub today has forsaken its original name and is now called the “Falcon”.

Different Craven Heifer Kris. I think the one Rex refers to is on the main road through Harle Syke.

That's the one, only it's in Burnley not Briercliffe ; likewise the rest of cop Row.

Went in the newly refurbished Craven Heifer on Saturday. If you like pounding noise supposedly meant to be music and shouting to hold a conversation then this is the place for you. I also could not see what £94000 had been spent on.
Made me feel my age. :D
regards
Margaret
