The Old Red Lion stood only 23 feet from the Bull, for which reason it was pulled down* more than sixty years ago. It was once kept by James Pate, whose four-horse stage-waggon long formed the chief means of carrying goods to and from Manchester, taking a full day for the journey each way.

*Demolished in 1868 according to A SKETCH OF BURNLEY SEVENTY YEARS AGO / JAMES GRANT / December 6th, 1887.

James Pate was my 4x great grandfather. He certainly ran the Red Lion- he was a publican, carrier and shoesmith and at one time on the town council. I'm trying to find out more about him. Did he also build the New Red Lion do you know?

Hi, welcome to the site.

It might be worth sending an email to the Burnley library. They have all kinds of useful info and might just have something on either the pubs or your family. Please let us know if their response is useful

That kind of figures as James died 1845 and his wife Mary ,to whom he left the Red Lion in perpetuity, died in1852. So it must have been sold sometime after.Though I am a little confused- which one was pulled down in 1868- if the Red Lion was still standing in 1869??

My Husbands 3x Great Aunt Sophia Harrison and her Husband Robert were living and working as Licensed victuallers at the Old Red Lion Inn on the 1851 census, the address given on the census is Market St. The Inn was put up for Auction in 1851 and was described as fronting onto the Market Place and Market St
Is this the same Red Lion as the one that stood near The Bull Hotel or was there more than one pub with the same name?
