I have received the following query by email.

Where is Ogglety-Gogglety ? Is it also know by another name? and where
did wallshaw lane originally lead to? why is it called wallshaw lane

Now I know I have heard of the Ogglety-Gogglety and I think it is steps but I do not know where.

Can anyone help please?

Oggelty Gogglety is a series of steps running up from the River Don to near Musty Haulgh Farm.
I would have thought Walshaw Lane in the past went across the river to Netherwood.

"A Joke" Mel !!!!! I remember you laughing. It's a well known landmark in Briercliffe/Harle Syke. It's been there forever.

Ekwall's Place Names of Lancashire gives Walshaw as from two Old English words : woella, meaning 'brook' and 'scaga', meaning 'shaw', a small wood.

The 1848 first OS map (6 inch) only shows the lane as in more recent times running a short distance down toward the valley bottom, maybe half way.

There is a footpath which runs through Netherwood and down to a bridge over the river. Once over the river the path splits into two, one to go through Musty Haulgh, the second into the industrial estate. Could the latter once have linked up with Walshaw Lane?
The path runs in the other direction from Netherwood to Worsthorne, from there it can go over to Yorkshire. Netherwood appears to be a crossroads of paths, the other being the Bronte Way, through Extwistle, and into Yorkshire.

There used to be a very old map online which could be searched and it seems to have disappeared, any ideas whatever happened to it. I used to enjoy going for walks on it

old-maps.co.uk isn't the one I used to look at, but, it shows a path and a broken road.
Put in Netherwood Farm, Burnley, Lancashire and if you look carefully and scan about a bit you can just about make it out. You can do the same putting in Burnley Lane Head and going down Walshaw Lane through Widow Hill/Widow Green area. The latter is probably the easier method.

I know exactly where Ogglety Gogglety is, (that's what it sounded like to me) as I was born in Harle Syke and would regularly walk there as a kid in the early 1960s. It was a path that started on left of what was a farm at G.R.866 344 and descended through a wooded grove down to the bridge over the River Don.

Zoom in on Burnley.Zoom in on Worsthorne. Zoom in just under Haggate.
Pick map scale 1:1500 not 1: 50,000( on top of page)
Click on Public rights of way,( List on left of page.)
You should now see Musty Haulgh if not, zoom in again till the format is not a O.S. map.
To Zoom out - click on icon on left of map and then click on map.
To Zoom in - click on icon on left of map and then click on map.
To move map - click on icon on left of map and then click and drag map and wait for it to load map. A bit slow.
