Post subject:  Little Cornwall

Received yesterday.

Can anyone give me any information on \'Little Cornwall\'
My husband\'s great grandfather was Robert Barnes, originally from Cornwall, he was a rope and twine manufacturer in both Burnley and Edenfield. We have a newspaper clipping (no idea from what year or indeed newspaper) re: Robert Barnes claiming that Little Cornwall was called so because of the Barnes family bringing so many workers with them from Cornwall. I wondered if you could either deny or confirm this information.
Many thanks

As far as I kmow, most of the miners who came to the Burnley area from Cornwall came in the mid 1870s. (Many came to break the strike in 1873, tho' probably didn't know that's why they were being recruited). These included my OH's 2x g'grandfather, Richard Phillips.

According to OH, little Cornwall was off Rossendale Road, to the left as you go towards Halifax. He says it consisted of only about 4 rows of houses, none of which remain. Roughly around where Harold avenue is now.

He too was always told that it took it's name from the number of Cornish people who lived there.

I'm hoping that one of the others who went to the meeting will remember what Roger said.

Basically, one of the Burnley employers offered work to some of the Cornwall miners as they were short of (or out of) work in Cornwall. He didn't pay them the full rate but they came anyway.

Mel's right, Roger did mention Little Cornwall. The employer gave either 1/2 or 2/3 the workers' usual wages, which was still enough for them to travel up to Briercliffe.

'A number of tin miners were drafted in from Cornwall to help break a strike by the Burnley coal miners in 1873, although the tin miners were not told that until they arrived at Burnley. They became known as 'Knobstickers' on account of the stick that they (the tin miners) had to carry around with them for their own protection.' (Jack Nadin)
