HI, I am a retired Police Officer in London who collects Police Medals. I recently purchased a Special Constabulary medal to LESLIE O\'BYRNE, 1919 - 2009, and was informed he was a member of the Burnley Auxiliary Fire Service. Can anyone confirm or elaborate?
Many thanks, Simon.

Hello Simon,

I found 3 references to Leslie (O'BYRNE) on the British Newspaper Archive, in the Burnley Express, though none indicate he was in the AFS in the town.

1939 Gaining a certificate in a Welder's course : oxyacetylene is mentioned, so fire does come to mind !
1950 Being assaulted, graphic account
1953 In hospital, listening to football commentary, a photo with others.

A Google search under 'Burnley Auxiliary Fire Service' will bring up a few items, including photos of the group.

Interesting hobby you have. Hope the above is of interest.

Rex
