I know it's not always possible to visit archives personally but, from experience, I would suggest that you do.

Without naming archives or staff involved, more than once I have requested information which has been copied and sent to me but on eventually managing to find time to visit the archives myself, I have found that the information sent to me has either been incomplete/incorrect or in one case, I was told that there was no result for my query but then I actually found what I was looking when visiting in person.

When I made my database of all the Proctors in Burnley as far back as I could, I started with the IGI list from FamilySearch.org. I checked every single entry and found numerous mistakes. I also found mistakes in the book in the library of the St Peters transcriptions. Its not always possible to view originals or films/fiches of originals but if you can it is always worth it

Thanks Sue. It's all simple, basic stuff but so many rely on the written word of others.
One error in your tree and you could be chasing the wrong family!!
