I know it's not always possible to visit archives personally but, from experience, I would suggest that you do. Without naming archives or staff involved, more than once I have requested information which has been copied and sent to me but on eventually managing to find time to visit the archives myself, I have found that the information sent to me has either been incomplete/incorrect or in one case, I was told that there was no result for my query but then I actually found what I was looking when visiting in person. |

When I made my database of all the Proctors in Burnley as far back as I could, I started with the IGI list from FamilySearch.org. I checked every single entry and found numerous mistakes. I also found mistakes in the book in the library of the St Peters transcriptions. Its not always possible to view originals or films/fiches of originals but if you can it is always worth it Sue |

Thanks Sue. It's all simple, basic stuff but so many rely on the written word of others. One error in your tree and you could be chasing the wrong family!! |
