Excellent Charon! Can you find the ship that Joseph William Wilcock travelled on?

I looked for Joseph first: the only one I found who seemed to fit was recorded as Joseph W Wilcock b1883, single, a farmer. This person sailed from London for Sydney on 28 March 1911 on the P&O ship Narrung. Take it or leave it!

Find my past is a great resource. I just found some Catlow relations that went to NZ.

Leaver, Mel, Gloria, Charon and Portia,

Thank you all so very much for this - I've just come home from work (I'm 8 hours ahead of you in Hong Kong) and this is like Christmas . . . so many leads to look into, I'm going to have to immerse myself on the weekend.

Leaver (sorry, I don't know your first name), I grew up in the Sutherland Shire - Lilli Pilli, Miranda and Caringbah. Came to Hong Kong for a two year contract and have been here now 18 years! My grandmother lives in Caringbah with my parents - "fighting fit" as she likes to joke, a truly extraordinary woman.

I believe that when she arrived in Australia they went to live in Orange in western NSW. I'm sure she told me her father Joseph worked for Cobb & Co. A while after Clara died Joseph moved his mistress in, and he fostered by grandmother and her brother out. She saw him maybe a handful of times at best, before he died. Her brother was run out of town when he was around 17 or 18 for allegedly getting a girl pregnant. She never saw him again and was told that he died during the war. About 18-20 years ago she was contacted by her nephew! Her brother had actually gone to Queensland, taken a different name, had a family and full life but never contacted his sister. Her nephew only discovered her when he was sorting through his father's papers - his mother had no idea.

My grandmother doesn't like speaking about any of this which is why i don't have much detail - she's had a long life without family (except of course us!) or really knowing where she came from so I'd love to be able to put some of the pieces together for her.

Thanks again,
Susan

Hi Susan, are you working for a Bank in Hong Kong?

Do you know the approximate year that William Hargreaves (the beer seller) died? If you can find his date of death, we might be able to find his Will, and then we can work forward hopefully finding some living relatives who remember your Grandma.

Cheers, Kristian

Susan,

in the circumstances, you may not wish to follow this up, but anyway (from Ancestry.com.au) Joseph William Wilcock appears in the NSW Electoral Roll for Calare NSW (which I see is part of Orange, where you said they went) in 1930 and 1936. My subscription doesn't let me see the address or any other details, but I should think this is your gt-grandfather.

Might there still be (half-)relatives there? It's only 73 years ago!

Charon

Morning all,

Thanks Charon . . . that's a little daunting, there may be some skeletons in the cupboard in Orange. William did bring his mistress home the day my grandmother's mother died . . . and he did foster out his children. I guess it's possible he had other children with her . . . hadn't even thought about that but it wouldn't be surprising in the context of this story!

Thanks so much to Kristian (Leaver) for the Burnley cemetry records. I have been over it a few times but without much luck.

Over the weekend my mother told me that she believes that my grandmother had said that her grandmother had written her to say that William and his daughters Clara (her mother), in Australia, and Mary, all died within 18 months of each other. Clara died when my grandmother was 11, so that's around 1920. I can't find William or Mary on the Burnley Cemetry listing for around that time or any dates that correspond with their birth dates.

My mother also told me that they think Anne, my grandmother's grandmother, lived into her 90s so she would have died in the mid 40s - early 50s.

There's a listing for a Fred Hargreaves, died 24/01/1917 age 30. This corresponds with his estimated birth year from the census - 1886/87 and from Patricia's baptism findings (thanks Patricia!). No family recollection of this. Thought he may have died in the war but couldn't find him on Burnley war listings.

There's also a listing for Albert, died age 61 on 4/7/54. Age corresponds. My mother seems to think that he was a builder who migrated to New Zealand when his son was around 16, so let's say in the 1930s. It's possible he came back.

Perhaps as St Stephens was the church chosen for the children's baptisms, this is where the family's funerals were carried out too so i'll see if I can find William or Anne there is the hope that I can locate a will.

Have also contacted the Burnley library re funeral notices in the newspapers of the time, so we'll see.

By the way, I'm not working in a bank here. I'm a journalist and editor by trade, newspapers and magazines, and was with the South China Morning Post, one of the biggest English language newspapers in Asia, for 11 years. But have been working in high end retail for the past 5 years, in marketing and business development, which is why my investigative skills and spelling are a little rusty!

Thanks,
Susan

Hi Susan, these are the grave details for the Frederick Hargreaves you mentioned. It doesn’t look like your family was buried at Burnley cemetery, so maybe they can be found at St. Stephen’s. Does anyone know if St. Stephen’s still has a cemetery? I have some Woodvine’s who also had their children baptised at St. Stephen’s and I wonder if they can be found there too.

I stayed at Kowloon when I visited Hong Kong, December 2007. I really liked the place and I would definitely go back. The Financial district had some amazing architecture and it looked brilliant at night when the buildings were all lit up.

I will look up William Hargreaves when I go to the Probate next.

Cheers, K

Fantastic Kristian, thank you. Where did you find the William Hargreaves listings?

I did a quick online search of search of St Stephens earlier but will go back to that and I think I'll give them a call.

I don't think that's Fred - I have no idea who Jane is at the same address and 20 odd years older, unless she's his aunt ... would seem that they're all in another cemetery.

Hi Susan, I found William on Free BMD http://www.freebmd.org.uk/
This is another useful site http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/

I’m fairly certain that is not the right Fred.
