I am researching the Woabank family wh lived in Briercliffe around the 1850s. Hartley Woabank was born c1854 & married Martha Ann Clayton. They had the following children: Elizabeth 1874 Henry c1880 Alice 1875 Ann 1879 Herbert 1880 Lollie c1884 Oswald c1886 Rachel 1891 Alice married Henry Taylor and lived in Burnley (they were my great/great/grandparents). Any information about the Woabanks would be greatly appreciated. I would love to hear from anyone else researching the same family. Claire |

Hi Claire, welcome to the site. Have you seen the Woabank gravestones on the main site? http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/Grave%20Stones.htm Are any of them in your tree? I think I have a couple more Woabank stones to add, I'll take a look. |

I knew I'd seen this before. When I got the marriage cert I looked up the name on ancestry because I wasn't sure I was reading it right. When – 26 June 1854 Where – The Register Office, Burnley Groom – Edward Procter, 30 yrs, bachelor, labourer of Lane Head Burnley Bride – Betty Leaver, 26yrs, spinster, weaver of Lane Head Burnley Grooms father – Edward Procter, farmer Brides father – John Leaver, farmer Witnesses – Joseph Woabank and the mark (x) of Thomas Heap |

I did a skeleton tree. It looks like this to me: Descendants of John WOABANK Generation No. 1 1. JOHN1 WOABANK was born 1791. He married SARAH UNKNOWN. Children of JOHN WOABANK and SARAH UNKNOWN are: i. HARTLEY2 WOABANK, b. 1827. ii. MARTHA WOABANK, b. 1832. iii. HENRY WOABANK, b. 1834. iv. JAMES WOABANK, b. 1839. v. JOSH (JOSEPH?) WOABANK, b. 1821. 2. vi. JOHN WOABANK, b. 1826. vii. SARAH WOABANK, b. 1829; m. THOMAS LEE, 12 Nov 1849, St James's Church, Briercliffe. Generation No. 2 2. JOHN2 WOABANK (JOHN1) was born 1826. He married ANN HARTLEY, daughter of JAMES HARTLEY in St Peter's Church, Burnley in 1848. She was born 1823. Children of JOHN WOABANK and ANN UNKNOWN are: i. WILLIAM WOABANK, b. 1849. ii. Hi Claire I can see you have been innundated with replies. You are quite right, everyone on this site is exceptionally helpful. I am particularly interested in the name Woabank, for I have never seen that variation before. Looking at John Woabank of Widow Green 1851, I see he has a son Hartley Woabank and that he himself hails from Wycoller. I too am very interested in that area for I have several Wallbank/ Walbanks in that place. Further, my research seems to indicate multiple marriages of Hartleys and Wallbanks which makes me wonder if there might possibly be a connection with your research. In particular, I have a stray John Wallbank of Fosters Leap, Circa 1790. As far as I know, Fosters Leap and Wycoller are just about within throwing distance. Having said all that, there are many many Hartleys around - it is alleged that in that area, 10% of the population were Hartleys in 1800. David Baxter. |

And Finally, the name Woabank is I am fairly sure an error. By reference to some Pedigree Files Deposited at Colne Library, John it is suggested is in fact John Walbank or [Wallbank], descended from a Walbank/Hindle Marriage. John was I believe born at Foster's Leap, Trawden abt 1790. He married Sarah Harrison at Thornton in Craven 2nd March 1817. That ties in with the 1841 Census at Widow Green, Briercliffe and correlates exactly with the Pedigree File attributed to the office of Caleb Howarth (1796-1879) Conveyancer of Marsden. Incidentally, the other names on the Pedigrees are of significant interest to me personally and I have been able to check independently about 80% of the other information. John's sister Martha, m John Smith of PIGHOLE, I believe. It is reported on this site that Smiths of Pighole and Smiths of Hill are related too. David Baxter. |
