I had not thought to check the IGI nor had I put in the Redman surname in the search engine of the Briarcliffe Society. They certainly look like they are the correct records. Thank you. |

Im not sure if this thread is still active. I am a direct descendent of John Burrows. I believe him to be my Great grandfather. I believe the line was Henry then John (Great Grandfather), Wilfred (Grandfather), Michael John (Father), Richard John (Myself), Finley John (my son). Id be very interested to hear from anyone with interest in our family. Richard. |

I am a direct descendant of the John Burrows (b. 1802) who married Betty Redman (b. 18 June 1802) on 9 Dec 1822 in St. Peter's, Burnley. They had the following children: Daniel, Ann, Betty, John, Thomas, William, Henry and Alice. I am desceded through the son, John (b. 1833) who immigrated to Massachusetts in 1872 (along with his brother, Thomas). Was your Henry Burrows born about 1844? In the 1871 UK census was he living with his mother, Betty Burrows in Burnley? |

In the 1881 UK census I have Henry living with his brother, William and his family. William's wife is Ann (kershaw) and they have a daughter, Minnie, born in 1872 in Burnley. She married a James Wilkinson in 1895. Does the above also sound right? I have never been able to find Henry Burrows in the 1891 UK census, but have a fair amount of information on the rest of the family. Also, I have never been able to discover the parents of our John Burrows (b. 1802). In the 1841 UK census he is living next to a Giles Burrows who may well be a relation. Earlier posts in this topic show that two marriages had not been found. Both are on Lancs OPC as follows. (Banns and marriage information) Giles BURROWS marr Margaret PRESTON at Burnley 23 June 1828. Giles of Hill End Bottom, weaver. Margaret of Blackhouse Lane. Abraham BORHOUSE (sic) marr Margaret CLEGG at Newchurch in Pendle 11 Sept 1790. Abraham a weaver. Both of this parish. I presume the minister was not familiar with this local surname. It is also puzzling that no children are found prior to Peggy in 1795 at Haggate. I have an interest because in my line there is Betty BURROWS marr Richard WATSON in 1795, with a witness Abraham BURROWS. I have not found any suitable baptism or birth for Abraham, unsure on Betty. I have a copy of the Removal Order for Abraham and family, Briercliffe to Reedley, 1811. Any ideas or information welcomed ! Rex |

I have found more on Abraham the elder, not good news I fear. Firstly the removal of the family to Reedley from Briercliffe was set aside, so they stayed. The following from the Lancaster Gazette, 29 March 1817. Returning home from Burnley market on 17 March with brother in law John HALSTEAD, there was a fight. As a result, presumably, Abraham died on the Thursday. Committed for trial at the Castle. From another source, he was acquitted. Perhaps in view of the time interval there was doubt about whether a blow in the fight was the cause of death. John H marr Sarah B at Colne in 1803, by certificate from Burnley, banns there. John of Marsden, Sarah of Briercliffe. Abraham and Sarah then are siblings, also too I think my Betty. No births or baptisms found. Could be at Haggate in the period from about 1770 to 1780 when there are no surviving register entries. Rex |
