Hi, welcome to the forum.
I'll have a look through some of the Briercliffe books that I have later on to see if there is any mention of them.
We did have another thread on Haggate House here viewtopic.php?f=4&t=626 The info is sketchy though and probably of no use as it appears to be more recent than what you are interested in.
I'm guessing from the other thread that I have already checked the books but I will take another look just in case.

I can't find anything that hasn't been mentioned in the other topic I'm afraid. There is mention of various Taylor's in Roger's book but it doesn't specify where any of them lived.

Do you have any names for the Taylors that you are interested in?

Haggate House is behind the bowling green, if you don't know whereabouts it is.

The taylors Im interested in started with Robert and Alice Taylor. They were my 3rd great grandparents. Their daughter Anne Married Robert Ingham and this is the line I follow down to Beatrice Ingham etc.. The Inghams and Taylors lived in Briercliffe for the best part of the 1800's as far as I can see. I had got stuck with the tree. My mother knew of the graves at Briercliffe as she did the tree in the 1970s. I only recently got the maiden name of Alice as Shoesmith. but have not got much further. Interesting today I have looked at the church records and found marriage dates for most of the children, one of which married an Halstead. I already have a couple of Halsteads in the tree and need to examine closer if they are the same!
The tree has taken on a new lease of life now as Im now seeing where they lived and through the photos how they lived. My grandmother had many pictures with no names. Many I have named through Shackletons and Coopers but no Taylors and few Inghams I suspect those not named are these characters.

Hi Steven, & welcome.
We have an Alice Shoesmith on our tree, plus several Halsteads & one or two Taylors. It's unlikely the same Alice as ours married a Leaver, but it may be the same family. We even have a Halstead Shoesmith.
If you haven't done already, it might be worth checking out the family trees http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/Family%20Trees.htm - mine's the same as Kris Baxter's as I mostly plagiarise his stuff

Looking at the records on line and through ancestry Susannah Taylor marries a William Banks and they ran the farm after her father John Taylor.

In 1863 the site quotes Lawrence Taylor as being a schoolmaster and so was his wife. Perhaps they worked at the local school. Is there any records available on staffing at the school before 1900?

I'm not sure which school this would be referring to Steven.

Out of interest, in your Taylors, was one of them named Hartley?

The Lancashire Township book written by Roger Frost mentions Hartley Taylor who had moved from Lane Bottom to South View by the time of the 1871 census. He was a cotton manufacturer, his business being listed in trade directories as Hartley Taylor & Co during the 1870's.

Roger Frost would probably know the answer to that one. There is an exhibition on the 13th and 14th Sept in Harle Syke and Roger will be there. If it is possible it would be worth a visit to pick his brains, or even John Bentley, they seem to know if any records are available.

I can't find any reference to Lawrence Taylor.

Maybe it is also worth contacting Burnley library? They may be able to say if there are any school records in the archives somewhere?

There is a forum member called peter_w_taylor (120)

Peter does not post in the forum, but he has an extensive Taylor tree which you might find helpful. Send him a private message and I am certain he will respond.
