HARGREAVES of 99 Burnley Road, Harle Syke. I am the grand-daughter of Levi Hargreaves and Clara Hargreaves (nee Simpson). They had four children - Norah (now 93!) Richard (my father now deceased) Beatrice (aged 87) and John (now deceased). Levi and Clara are buried in a marked grave in Haggate Cemetery along with Denis Lightowler (Beatrice's husband). Levi was a member of a large family of Hargreaves' who I believe were carters at some stage. Both Norah and Beatrice as youngsters worked in the Siberia Mill. Norah used to run the bakery on Burnley Road not far from 99. I believe the shop is now a plumbers. Anybody who knows more or wants to communicate on Harle Syke life in the 20th century is welcome to contact me on holidays@french-leave.com Caroline JONES (nee Hargreaves)

Hi Mel, yes, I have a large Simpson tree, but these Simpson’s lived at Lowerhouse, Habergham Eaves, and as far as I know they are not related to the Haggate branch.

James Henry Pickles (1876-1932) is Susannah’s (1866-1936) younger brother, so he must be your Gt. Uncle. http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/Sol ... ickles.htm

I think you are related to these Pickles too?

Susannah’s parents are James Pickles (1832-1886) b. Worshorne, and Hannah Leaver (1835-1915) b. Extwistle, so Caroline is also related to Noel Harry Leaver http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/Pho ... Leaver.htm

Hello Caroline,

Levi Hargreaves was my uncle, he died of a fall into a quarry after
slipping off the running board of his wagon trying to get out of a
thunderstorm. Norah's shop was 101 Burnley Road, not the plumbers, it was a
café and bakers, previously run by Mr and Mrs Jones and they lived at 26
Parker street.
Just a bit of information for you, if you would like some more about the
Simpson family, I have a lot of information as my mother was Rose Hannah
Simpson married name Greenwood, lived at 7 Townley street, Harle Syke.
P.S. Richard Simpson, father of Florence, Clara, Molly and Rose died at 99
Burnley Road in 1901 as the Simpson family owned the full row. That's why
Clara lived at 99, Florence lived at 89, and Molly lived at 91.

Yours Faithfully
John Roger Greenwood
