I have just obtained the certificate of Edmund's second marriage in 1874 to Elizabeth Nutter, a spinster. I am guessing that she was a distant relative. On this certificate, his father is shown as Abraham Hanson, a shoemaker. Can anyone explain this discrepancy in surnames please, or does anyone recognise the family?

Have you obtained the first marriage certificate to Ellen, what does it say on that?

I ordered that certificate and the GRO messed up my order and sent a completely different family. They are now trying to put this right. So - good point - I will see what that one says. Thank you, Patricia

Hi
On the Haggate birth index there is an Edmund Nutter born 1 Jan 1815 son of Nancy of Haggate, perhaps Nancy married later.

we do have a least on instance on our tree like this. It was a godsend - the groom was illegitimate and consequently took his mother's name. Usually the marriage cert would therefore have no entry for the father's name but on this occasion it was shown (presumably with the father's consent). So for once we were able to see who the father of an illegitimate child was.
Maybe that's what happened here?

Thank you Maureen and Gilly for those useful comments. I also have another branch of the family in a similar case ( in Clitheroe ).He is John Smith, son of Alice, whose father is named as Robert Hopwood. Robert eventually married Alice years later, but John kept the name Smith. This does look like the same sort of thing.
I have not been able to find where I can see Edmund's birth. The IGI does not have it. Where did you get this from, Gilly ?
P.S. The certificate for Edmund's first certificate still hasn't arrived.

Hi
The info is taken from a microfiche purchased from the Lancashire family history society.
The index is of births, not baptisms

I have just received the marriage certificate of Edmund Nutter and his first wife Ellen Riley. Edmund's father is shown as Abraham Hanson, cordwainer, on this certificate too. I can only assume he was Edmund's father out of wedlock.
