I am a new person to this forum and am wondering if anybody has any info on Samuel Catlow the first mayor of Colne please? Anything on Colne itself in the 1800's also would be of great interest to me. I am related through my maternal side and have worked out that Samuel would have been my mothers great grandmother's brother so my mothers great uncle. :D

Hi Lynda, welcome to the forum.

I research Catlow’s of Colne and Burnley and I have not come across a former Mayor by the name of Samuel Catlow. What year was he born?

My Catlow tree can be seen here http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/paf ... htm#CATLOW

Also, there are some photos of Colne here http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/Pho ... /Colne.htm

My Samuel Catlow c1844 was the son of Samuel Catlow c1808 and Mary Foulds c1811 and they lived in Colne. He was a mill owner and a Justice of the Peace and became the first Mayor of the newly established borough of Colne in 1891.
Thanks for your reply Lynda

You can find a picture and short biography of Samuel Catlow, J.P. of Colne on page 162 of the following book:
Lancashire at the Opening of the Twentieth Century: Contemporary Biographies.

This can be viewed at the "Spinning the Web" website:
