Can anyone help me with Allen Edmondson, b Briercliffe abt 1796. His wife was Sarah (aka Sally) Taylor. He had a son John 1823, who was my gggrandfather. I cannot be sure who his father was, and would like any info to help me.

Hi Holly, welcome to the forum.

There is an Allen Edmondson baptism in the church records on the site, it's much too early to be your Allen but names often ran in families so it's possibly a connection.

The approximate birth date for your Allen is about the time of the opening of Haggate Chapel. I have transcribed the early records and added them to the site but there were gaps missing from the film. It's perhaps more likely to have been at either Burnley or Colne Parish Church. I had a look on the LDS website and there is only really 1 result in the right time frame

ALLEN EDMUNDSON
Christening: 26 NOV 1797 Whalley, Lancashire, England
Father: EDMUND EDMUNDSON Batch No.: P005572

Although it says Whalley, Burnley Church was a sister church to the church at Whalley (or a Chapel of Ease?). I was once told that if a family wanted to give the appearance of being wealthy, they would hold their family events at Whalley and not the local Parish Church.

Do you have an 1841 census return for him?

Answered my own question

HO107/506/22 folio 7 pg 6
Burnley Lane Head, Burnley
Edmondson Allen 60 Weaver Y
Edmondson Ann 20 Y
Baldwin Edmondson 10 Y

Another resource to look for is a Will. It's possible that it might give an area of birth or where the rest of the family came from. I had a family in Barrowford and the will revealed that there was a connection to Heptonstall which I had not previously been aware of.

I see he was well into his 80's when he died. It would be quite something to live to such a good age in those days - you might find a report on him in the Burnley newspaper. I've seen them in the past for 'octogenarians'. A useful bit of info if you have one in your family, they can be quite detailed about the life of the person in question.
