BURNLEY MAN APPOINTED HEADMASTER

Mr. Bertram Leaver, the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. P. Leaver, of 409, Manchester road, Burnley, has been unanimously appointed headmaster of the Senior Mixed Church School, at Malton, Yorkshire.

Mr. Leaver spent his early life in Burnley under the guidance and tuition of his father, who was headmaster of St. James’s School for 34 years until his retirement on superannuation in 1925. Mr. Leaver has been first assistant at the Senior Mixed Church School, Malton, since leaving St. John’s College, York, twenty years ago. He has taken a very active part in public affairs at Malton, and is keenly interested in the British Legion, social services, Young Men’s League, Freemasonry and local sporting activities.

As accomplished musician, he has been the pianist for the Malton orchestra for many years, and is the “alto lead” in the Malton Male Voice Quartile, a combination which has won various prizes in Northern Musical Festivals. On the recommendation of H.M. Inspector, Mr. Leaver has been granted, in the past, free special summer courses in book-binding and decoration at Scarborough, geography and advanced art at Balliol College, and history at Cambridge University. Since the reorganisation schemes were inaugurated a few years ago he has specialised in English, geography, history, advanced art and practical music.

Working on it . .
So far I can't find a death for Margaret. Have found her on 1871, shown as married, living with her mother at Byerden (?) Mill.

Sarah Shoesmith, head, wid, 61, b Briercliffe
Margaret Leaver, daur, marr, 27, cotton weaver, b Briercliffe
Stephen Shoesmith, son, unm, 20, cotton weaver, b Burnley
Benjamin Shoesmith son, unm,15, cotton weaver, b Burnley

I did once find an abraham that I thought might be him as a stray on a Scottish census. Will keep you posted.

Oh no! Spurs just scored.

As regards the Ellen on 1861, there is a marriage in 1860

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1860
LEAVER Abraham & BURROWS Ellen Burnley Register Office or Registrar Attended. Preston RM/14/115

Also a death in 1863:

Lancashire Death indexes for the years: 1863
LEAVER Ellen, aged 21 at Burnley. Records at Preston BU/41/81

So it's quite probable that the Abraham who married Margaret was previously married to Ellen.

Teh more I looked at this last night the more I knew I'd been down this road before.

Then I found a posting I did last May:

"I have Abraham Leaver, born Haggate 1839, on the Haggate/ Briercliffe censuses for 1841, 1851 and (with wife Ellen) 1861.
He then disappears until 1901 when I think I’ve found him at 72 Milton St Burnley with wife Ann.
I’ve tried the usual things (Lever/ Lever/ Levers etc) with no success. Also, I’ve found the marriage to Ellen but no recorded death for Ellen or subsequent remarriage.
Can anyone help? This guy, on the 1841, was living with the Olive Nutter who I think might be Olive Leaver whose marriage certificate names her as Alice. Boy is this branch giving me some grief. Am beginning to think they were in some sort of witness protection and didn’t want to be found.
Have now found Abraham & Ann on 1891 as Leavel so I'm just missing 1871 & 1881 now."

First off, I'm as certain as I can be it's the same Abraham who married Ellen, Margaret and Ann (sometimes known as Nancy) in succession.

What I can't find:
Abraham's birth (c 1840)
Margaret's death (between 1871 & 1891)
a marriage to Ann (between 1881 & 1891)
Censuses for Abraham 1881 & 1891 or Margaret after 1871 when she's living with her mother.

The 1891 census shows:
RG12; Piece: 3365; Folio 116; Page 60
32 Dall St, Habergham Eaves

Abraham Leavel, head, marr, 52, living on own means, b Haggate
Ann Leavel, wife, marr, 53, b Altham
Elizabeth Bradley, daur 21, cotton weaver, b Fecit
Jane A Bradley, daur 19 cotton weaver, b Fecit
Rhodes Bradley, son, 16 cotton weaver, b Fecit

The children's names have been transcribed as Leavel but the original image has them as Bradley.
Ann Bradley is on 1881 as a widow with the above children.

I've tried every which way to find him 1871 & 1881, even searching for unnamed male b 1840 +/-2 Briercliffe/ Haggate/ Burnley. Maybe he was abroad?

Maureen, on the 1911 census Abraham’s birth place is Clitheroe D???? Briercliffe. What is the distance between Clitheroe and Briercliffe?

Just had a look at 1911 Kris. It's Briercliffe, Clitheroe Division. Clitheroe is a registration district, but why Briercliffe would belong there rather that Burnley I don't know.
Interesting it shows him as having had 4 children (2 deceased). I assume that's been crossed out because it was only married women who had to put that, rather than because it wasn't true.

My name is Dr. John David Leaver (b. 1962), and that Ph.D. thing is in history, so I was poking around on the internet using my paternal grandfather's name, when I found the Briercliffe society. Aren't there a lot of leavers around?

I'm planning a school history of the First World War, so was wondering how many family members, near or distant as the case maybe, might be included in a chapter intended to encourage students to consider their own family connections to the Great War through examples of the author's own.

My paternal grandfather was Stephen Gerald Leaver (1891-1971), son of James Leaver (1854-1928), who served with the Dorset Regiment and died in 1971; his son, my father John Raymond Leaver died last June. Using your excellent resource, it seems after a casual 'shuffty' that I can trace my paternal line back to 1794. I have my grandfather's service number from the Dorsets 20337, but haven't yet followed this up, beyond what I could find on the web.

That should be enough for a trip to the Army Museum or the Public Records Office to see if I can locate any of Stephen Gerald's service records. I'm currently living in Savannah, Georgia, so won't be over to the UK until December. My father and mother moved from Burnley to Manchester in 1962, so I don't have a lot of personal experience of the area, beyond frequent visits and supporting Burnley Football Club, of course.

I'd be interested in corresponding with anyone who might have anything to add that I don't already know, given what I've shared on here so far.

Best wishes, David Leaver
