Without a trip to Burmley to view the records Kris, I'm afraid not. When I do go, I'll take a look.

Kris
Thisis the marriage from lancashirebmd:
1867
Groom: LEAVER John
Bride: HARGREAVES Martha
Where: Briercliffe, St James
Records at Preston CE114/1/25

I've checked out the births, there's one each in 1850, 1851 and 1852 so it would need the certs to narrow it down. I'll keep pondering who he was. Odd that the father's surname is different..

Mel, is this sufficient evidence to update the info on the church records section?

There's a marriage on lancashire bmd:
1849
EMMETT Lawrence
LEVER Betty
Briercliffe, St James
Records at Preston CE114/1/100

This is a good candidate for John Leaver's parents. If that's the case, he must have been born before the marriage so none of the births I mentioned above would be the right one

Lawrence Emmett/ Emmott and Betty are on the 1851 census with a 3 year-old son John Emmott:
1851 census
Haggate, Briercliffe with Extwistle
Hartley Emmott 65 , head, widower, hand loom weaver, born Briercliffe
Lawrence Emmott 20, son, marr, labourer - quarry, born Briercliffe
Betty Emmott 22, daur-in-law, marr,
John Emmott 3, grandson, born Briercliffe
Joseph Catlow 43, brother-in-law, widower, ? lab, born Briercliffe
Ellen Catlow 31 (21?), niece, single, power loom weaver - cotton, born Briercliffe

It looks like he was born before his parent's marriage, then caled by his father's surname, but had to put his birth registration name on his marriage certificate.
What does anyone else think?

Don't know if this is coincidence or not, but John Leaver and Anne Catlow had a daughter Elizabeth, born c1828. There's a couple of Catlows on the 1871 census with Betty Emmott (nee Leaver) - who I think is the mother of the John we're looking for.

If I'm right Kris he's one of ours!

Ther is a Martha Hargreaves, daughter of Christopher Hargreaves, who would fit the marriage at the beginning of this thread:
1861 census:
Higher Rakehead Burnley
RG9; Piece: 3068; Folio: 82; Page: 11

Christ Hargraves, 30, head, marr, overloooker of power looms (cotton), born Barrowford
Mary Hargraves 31. wife, marr, cotton weaver, born briercliffe
Henry Hargraves 12, son, errand boy, born Burnley
Martha Hargraves 10, daur, housekeeper & at school, born Burnley
William Hargraves 8, son, scholar, born Burnley
Sarah Hargraves 5, daur, scholar, born Burnley
John Hargraves 2, son, born Burnley

I couldn't find the Emmetts in 1861 but it seems Betty probably died in 1857 - there's death on Lancashirebmd 1857 for a woman of the right age.
Then there's a marriage of Lawrence Emmett in the Briercliffe Church records in 1857:
When: 17 Nov 1857
Where: Church of Briercliffe
Groom: Lawrence Emmett, Weaver,, Aged 27 of Haggate, Widower
Bride: Margaret Ingham, Weaver, Aged 20 of Scar, Spinster
Groom's father: Hartley Emmett, Weaver
Bride's father: Daniel Ingham, cooper
Witnesses: James Hudson, Ellen Catlow

The witness could be the Ellen Catlow on the 1851 census

John Emmet 14, son, powerloom weaver cotton, born Briercliffe
Ann Emmet 2, daur, born Briercliffe

Maureen, I think Mel should delete the "apprentice" after all this you have done.
