I just posted a marriage for Ann Leaver/ Robert Barker. This would appear to be the family:

1841 Census - HO107/506/15 folio 8 pg 8
Banks, Briercliffe with Extwistle
Thos Laver, 60 years, Weaver, b. Lancs
Sarah Laver, 55 years, Weaver, b. Lancs
John Laver, 25 years, Weaver, b. Lancs
Nanny Laver, 25 years, Weaver, b. Lancs
Abraham Laver, 15 years, Weaver, b. Lancs
Wm. Sutcliffe, 11 years, Weaver, b. Lancs
Thos Sutcliffe, 5 years, b. Lancs

Abraham Leaver was a witness to the marriage - he married Robert Barker's sister Grace 2 years later .
The church records have the parents of Abraham and Ann as Thomas and Sally. I'm not sure whether there was a mistake on the census enumerator's part or whether Sarah was known as Sally

The two Sutcliffe children tie into my tree. In 1851, they can be found at
HO107/2251 folio 131 pg 17 Yeomans, living with my Sutcliffe lot. I belive, though this has yet to be confirmed by the discovery of a document, that these Leavers had a daughter who married one of my Sutcliffes, possibly Joseph. She died between the marriage and the 1841 census leaving the husband (Joseph?) and 2 young sons.

Edit - This is the household detail for 1851

Sarah Sutcliffe Head W 79 Farmer b.Briercliffe
Joseph Sutcliffe, son, W 49, Lab, Stone quarry b.Briercliffe
Sarah Sutcliffe, Daur, U, 46, Servant, b.Briercliffe
William, Son, U, 42,Lab b.Briercliffe
James, son, U, 39, Cust? b.Briercliffe
Ellen Sutcliffe, Daur, U, 24, Servant in house b.Briercliffe
William Sutcliffe, Grandson, U 20, Firebeater b.Briercliffe
Thomas Sutcliffe, 15, Power Loom Weaver b.Briercliffe
Mary Heap, lodger, Un, 7, Pauper Hand loom weaver b.Briercliffe

There is Thomas Leaver of Banks, Briercliffe, buried at Haggate 24/12/1845.
Sarah is still at Banks on teh 1851 census as widow with a (15 year-old?) grandson Thomas.

Maureen, May last year I received a letter from Ruth Shackleton which I appear to have misplaced and forgotten about, but today I found it and I am pleased to say it has information on our Leaver lines which we do not!!

In the letter Ruth says…”I remember a visit from a cousin (?) of my Mother’s, Leslie Leaver, from London (?) dressed in a smart grey suit, unusual in our village. Perhaps he was a son of Robert Thomas Leaver who, according to one of my cousins, was “an advertising agent in Eastbourne, Luton and London (with Punch)”….

We have no details for a Leslie Leaver so this is something to look into when we get a chance.

Linda Mary Lever (spelling on birth cert) was born 18 April 1873 at Hill End. (Linda Mary Leaver married Joseph Sutcliffe at Ebenezer Chapel)

Linda Mary Leaver had three siblings, Fielding Parker Leaver, Robert Thomas Leaver and William Leaver. Ruth says that William Leaver died “aged 25, back in Briercliffe, after his return from the Boer War” William was born circa 1880 so he died around 1905.

In the 1881 Census “the four children and their Mother, Sarah, were living with Sarah’s sister (Betty Riley – and husband Ambrose) and their Mother Nanny Sutcliffe, nee Parker, in Nelson. Linda’s name given as “Linllid” (!) ages of children 7,5,3 and 10 months.”

Linda Mary Leaver’s parents were Thomas Lever and Sarah Sutcliffe. Ruth has dates of birth for both. Thomas Lever born 30 September 1849 at Hill End, and Sarah Sutcliffe born 11 August 1849 at Yeomans. Ruth thinks that Thomas Lever left for the USA around 1880, again we have no information on this if it is correct.

On another Sutcliffe / Leaver line she has Joseph Sutcliffe born 26 February 1870 (Joseph Sutcliffe married Linda Mary Leaver)

Joseph’s parents were Jane Leaver (b. 23 August 1830) and Simeon Sutcliffe (b. 30 September 1824)

Jane Leaver, the one mentioned above, b. 23 August 1830, parents were James Leaver b. 9 April 1798 at Hill End and Betty Nuttall. Ruth gives a date of marriage, 11 June 1818, but unfortunately there is no church mentioned.

Anyhow, a few things to look up when we have time.

I assume this is the Shackleton connection for this family?
