Another one to cross off the list then.
I have tried all sorts of searches to find them in the 1851 and 1861 censuses, I have put christian names in with no surname, thinking it may be a bad transcription, and the same with surnames. I have found two deaths of a John in Sept 1852, and a Mary in 1856 sept, thinking if they aren't in the 1851 then surely they are in the 1861, 1871 and if not maybe they are deceased.
Hope this helps. I find a few missing from one census but can usually be found in another.

Kris, I have sent for this.
FILE - Burnley. Notice of intention to apply for order for reimbursement of maintenance against James Kippax, stonemason, of his bastard son by Nancy Spencer, singlewoman - ref. QSP/3102/16 - date: 1839 7 Mar

I think he is the James Kippax who first married Mary Parker in 1841, then Betty Leaver in 1860. If he is the same person then he fathered this child before his marriage to Mary. Isn't he the Kippax who we think could have fathered Betty's children whilst living at Hollin Grove? If he is the same Kippax then he certainly put it about a bit  .

Kris updated his tree before he went away and appears to have connected all of his separate Leaver lines. It is on the site at http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/Family%20Trees.htm

Gloria, did you receive this file, if so what did it say?

They never got back to me, SO, I sent another e-mail, got an automated reply saying it was being dealt with but nothing yet. I sent the last one about a fortnight ago. I usually get a good response from Preston. Will let you know when something arrives.

I just checked out the theory that Betty Emmott, nee Leaver, could be the daughter of John Leaver & Ann Catlow. However that Betty is already spoken for - we have the certificate for her marriage to Edward Proctor. http://briercliffesociety.co.uk/talkbac ... .php?t=745
There is another John Leaver (born 1806, weaver of Haggate, wife Mary) on the 1841 census. He has a daughter Betty of the right age.
This looks like a distinct possibility

Kris & I were working on this family yesterday. From the extra bits of information we dug up I think Betty Leaver was the daughter of John & Mary (1806).
1. According to the marriage details of Betty Leaver and Lawrence Emmett (April 1849), she was daughter of John Leaver (weaver) of Haggate. Only one John Leaver, weaver, shows up on the 1841 census at Haggate.
2. There is a Betty Leaver on the 1841 census with him - aged 13. The 1851 census shows Betty Emmott aged 22, which is approx the right age.
3. One of the witnesses to the Betty Leaver/ LAwrence Emmett marriage was Betty Proctor. John's son John (who would be Betty Leaver's brother if I'm right) married a Betty Proctor 3 months later.

I have Abraham Leaver, born Haggate 1839, on the Haggate/ Briercliffe censuses for 1841, 1851 and (with wife Ellen) 1861.
He then disappears until 1901 when I think I’ve found him at 72 Milton St Burnley with wife Ann.
I’ve tried the usual things (Lever/ Lever/ Levers etc) with no success. Also, I’ve found the marriage to Ellen but no recorded death for Ellen or subsequent remarriage.
Can anyone help? This guy, on the 1841, was living with the Olive Nutter who I think might be Olive Leaver whose marriage certificate names her as Alice. Boy is this branch giving me some grief. Am beginning to think they were in some sort of witness protection and didn’t want to be found.

Have now found Abraham & Ann on 1891 as Leavel so I'm just missing 1871 & 1881 now
