Post subject:  Sagars of Catlow

Hi all, I've been reading this forum with great interest, and wondered if anyone can help? I'm sure John Bentley's book on the Sagars of Catlow would be hugely helpful, if anyone knows where I can get a copy.

One of my ancestors was William Sagar, c1809-1877. He was the son of John Sagar of Catlow who died 1855. William was 1/2 brother to John Sagar, later a local councillor living at Coley Hall, & Howarth Sagar, also a councillor and manufacturer of Throstle Nest Mill.

However, I run into difficulties when trying to unravel William's early life:

My best bet is that he was born 1809 to John and Ann ( nee Howarth). John was a weaver and signed his marriage certificate with his mark, whereas later documents are fully signed - is this consistent with later descriptions of John as a "yeoman/ independent/ landed proprietor".

I wonder if this could be the same John (a weaver) & Anne living in Whitefields at the birth & death of their son Henry 1812-1827, or of their son Richard in 1820 (now described as yeoman). There's also a daughter Mary born to John and Anne, a farmer of Whitewalls in 1812 (different family?) . Anne died in 1822 aged 37, shortly before "my" John Sagar's second marriage to Keziah.

If anyone can shed any light on this, I'd really appreciate your thoughts - thankyou!

I'm not sure if John is still with us. I know he lost his wife, earlier this year I think.
I'll email Roger and ask if he knows where you might get a copy, or if John himself is contactable these days.
