I have done a lot of research of late on these two names, mainly the latter, a name once quite common in and around Colne/Marsden : just look at MANCKNOWLES in the Colne register on Lancashire OPC.

HIGGINs were of Ethersall in Lt Marsden, MANCKNOWLES of Townhouse in Gt Marsden, also of Foulridge. In my history anyway.

I may have an article on my MANCKNOWLES in a family history journal in the next few months. In the meantime, I would be pleased to share information with anyone who has these names. Mine are 1640 back !! But in the process I have picked up information on more recent times.

Mancknowles is a surname I have never heard of, you live and learn.

MANCKNOWLES, with a host of variants, derives from the placename Mankinholes near Todmorden.

Bennett's History of Marsden and Nelson has material on both names.

Slightly off-topic: I was looking at a page from a 1953 edition of Nelson Leader and happened to see a death notice for a John Slater of Mancknowles Street, Nelson.

It took me a while to find it - search for Mancknols street on google maps. Don't blame google for getting it wrong, though - the street name plate spells it the same way.

Yes, MANCKNOL(L)S a common variant. My favourite is MANKENHOLEZ !

Very odd it should seemingly die out having been quite common. MAGNOLLS etc may be the same, in some cases.
