My 2nd great grandmother was Martha HALSTEAD nee DUERDEN.

Martha was born at Brierfield in about 1828 and at the time of the 1841 census was a servant at MARSDEN hall ..

maybe some will recognise her

I received the following in an email message this morning. Is it of interest to you Robert?
"I\'m hoping you can help me out. The Duerden Family here in Utah are trying to compile and publish a Duerden Family History book for the family members. The problem is we live here in Utah and don\'t have access, or even know much about the Duerden Family who live, or lived there in Marsden/Nelson area.

I was so hoping to know if you have information on the area, photos of Haggate Chapel/Graveyard, or histories of the area as well. This would help us out so much.

I\'m looking forward to your reply,
Bobbie J. Banks"

I have replied by email stating that the site is quite new and that I have more pictures as well as records to add. I also suggested that they join the forum.

Can Anyone Help Me Out Here?

I'm looking down-under for my ancestors:
Richard Duerden, died 10 Jun 1879, Bridge street, Brierfield, Marsden, England, 80 years old, and a laborer of senile decay. Our family records state he was buried at Haggate Chapel. Martha Hudson Duerden was his wife and she died 24 Oct 1860, but don't know where she is buried.

We would like very much to find their heardstones and records for sure where
they are buried, but I can't find them.

I live to far away to search myself, or would love to go to the graveyard. Could anyone help me locate them?
Searching for family,
Bobbie

Hi Bobbie,
as mentioned in the reply I just sent to you

"The Duerden Monumental Inscriptions for Haggate were recorded during the 1980's. If there is no reference to your Richard amongst them, then this would suggest that either the stone was illegible or there was no stone standing on the grave.
I believe the burial records for Haggate are held at Burnley Library. You could contact them and they may put you in touch with a professional researcher for the area (I do not know of anyone). "

These are the contact details for the library -

Hi Deecat, welcome to the site.

I've found Elizabeth and Margaret (along with a couple of other family members) on the 1881 census but it appears Thomas Holden has died. Number 31 Hebrew Road was listed as the same schedule.

RG11/4149 folio 43 page 10
29 Hebrew Road, Burnley
Elizabeth Holden, Head, widow, 37, Butcher, b.Colne
Sarah Ann, daur, 12, scholar, b.Colne
Margaret, daur, 8, scholar, b.Colne

31 Hebrew Road, Lock Up Shop
Grace Holden, Mother, widow, 64, b.Yorkshire
Moses Duerden, lodger, unm, 27, general labourer, b.Colne

1891
RG12/3364 folio 92 page 47
53 Brougham Street, Burnley
Elizabeth Holden, Head, widow, 47, Cotton weaver, b.Colne
Sarah A, daur, 22, cotton weaver, b.Burnley
Margaret, daur, 18, cotton weaver, b.Burnley

I've been struggling to find them in the 1871 census but it seems that sarah Ann was born before Thomas & Elizabeth married. I'll have a look for Elizabeth Duerden in 1871.

Post subject:  Re: DUERDEN

I think I have found them.

Living with his parents-
1871
RG10/4152 folio ? pg 14
Hare and Hounds
Thomas Holden, son, unm, 28, butcher b.Yorkshire, Austwick

I think this must be Elizabeth. I searched for Moses, not Elizabeth, but I think 2 year old Sarah A could be the clincher -
1871
RG10/4146 folio 183 pg 43
92 Anne Street, Burnley
Sarah Duerden, Head, W, Housekeeper, b.Colne
Elizabeth, dau, Unm, 26, cotton weaver, b.Colne
Joseph, son, unm, 24, Throstle overlooker, b.Colne
Sarah, dau, un, 20, cotton weaver, b.Colne
Moses, son, un, 17, doffer, b.Colne
Sarah A, G Dau, 2, b.Burnley
