It shows how quickly a tree can be traced with the use of the internet - unlike in earlier days when we used to trawl through census film after census film for hours at the library and probably still not find the ancestor we were hunting. I do think it was a much more rewarding pastime back then. The feeling of excitement and achievement having found a relative on a census was one that I rarely get with the internet. Mind you, I hit the jackpot yesterday, I found a Wolverhampton ancestor on the 1851 census that I have looked for on and off for over 2 years. The surname of my ancestor is Harley, they have been listed in various places as Early, Hurley and Erly amongst one or two other alternate spellings. This 1851 result was listed as Yarley! The enumerator wrote it that way so my ancestor must have been one for dropping his "h's". A bit like me

You'd be surprised Gloria, I've done that a couple of times - more fun if the place is in absolute silence (rare these days!)

I remember the first time I visited Lancashire for research - I booked a day off work and went to Nelson library and spent the whole day on a microfilm reader looking at the 1891 and 1871 census. The 1881 was online then but only on the LDS website and the 1901 had not been released. I found nothing of any use though I did find references for one or two Sutcliffes that were not in my tree (and still are not). I then drove all the way home again really disappointed. I repeated the trip the following week and found the family I was looking for in 1891. It took me well over a year to get back to 1841 with just one family as I could only make the trip north very occasionally. Back then, groups such as the LFH&HS were far more important to research than they are today they still play an important role.

But has either of you handled the enumerators' books, as you did in the 1970s at Chancery Lane ? !!

No Rex I haven't, but what I have handled were some manuscripts from the 1300's and they never even asked me to put gloves on. That was at the Preston records office and it was tied up with ribbon. Cannot remember the details off hand, other than it was to do with the Parkers and obviously in latin. I just couldn't believe I was sat there holding these fragile documents dated from the 1300's.

No Rex - unfortunately that is a joy that I have not experienced. I got a real buzz when I went to Wakefield Registry of Deeds though.

I have never come across the name Easter, it is not a mistranscription, but I wonder if she was called Esther and it is a spelling mistake.
Answered my own question, looked at the 1861 and it is Esther.
