Mel, he was illegitimate. On his birth cert the father’s name is blank so perhaps you are right and he was a Blackburn.

I was trying to think laterally here, back-tracking Susannah to see whether her maother was born a Blackburn. But I can't find her parent's' marriage

I wonder if Trawden records would reveal anything? A baptism maybe? Sometimes they made comments at the side of a name or if the mother said the fathers name is **** they would add it as a remark wouldn't they.

On 1881 census there is a Herbert Blackburn (born 1871) who could be the one Mel found in 1891, he was born Trawden and living in Higham, which is not a long way from Gannow, if you went as the crow flies towards Ightenhill. So that could possibly rule him out.

Jonathon & Blackburn look of an age to be brothers, don't they? Also they each have a son named after the other.
However I've found Jonathon's baptism:
Baptism: 28 Dec 1817 St Bartholomew, Colne, Lancashire, England
Jonathan Catlow - Son of John Catlow & Ann
Abode: Hole
Occupation: Weaver
Baptised by: W.Vernon Off. Curate
Register: Baptisms 1813 - 1819, Page 243, Entry 1937
Source: LDS Film 1471024
I know it's the same one because on the 1841 census for Jonathon there was an Alison born 1826. Her baptism is recorded:
Baptism: 13 Apr 1823 St Bartholomew, Colne, Lancashire, England
Alison Catlow - Dau of John Catlow & Nanny
Abode: Trawden
Occupation: Labourer
Baptised by: J.Henderson off.curate
Register: Baptisms 1819 - 1925, Page 206, Entry 1647
Source: LDS Film 1471024
Wonder if they were cousins?

This is Blackburn Catlow’s family tree http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/paf ... 3.htm#1406

Blackburn Catlow was born 14 April 1811 at Colne. He was the son of Jonathan Catlow and Margaret (Peggy) Shuttleworth.

I think this is the baptism of John, father of Jonathon:
Baptism: 29 Dec 1793 St Bartholomew, Colne, Lancashire, England
John Catlow - Son of Jonathan Catlow & Betty
Born: 26 Nov 1793
Abode: Haigh
Occupation: Wool Manufacturer
Register: Baptisms 1790 - 1812, Page 45, Entry 21
Source: LDS Film 1471024
If that's the case, Jonathon (b1818) & Blackburn don't even share a Catlow grandfather as Blackburn's grandparents were JoHN & mARY.
Curiouser and curiouser
