Hi Gilly:

My mother's mother's people were Proctor, Clough and Heys.

My mother's father's people were Lancaster and Geldard, and Sunter. My great-grandparents Lancaster raised their family at 9 Sutcliffe Street in Harle Syke, I have seen the notice from the UK Military in September 1918 to them at that address saying my grandfather's brother had been killed in the Pas de Calais.

I stayed in that house as a boy, my grandfather sold it in 1962. So far I'm drawing a complete blank on the Lancasters though. My grandfather, William Lancaster, was born on 3 November 1900, father Harry Lancaster, mother Elizabeth (Geldard), and I think her mother was Alice.

The Lancasters all died young, still do. I have to pay up front for a three-minute egg.

Ross

Every aspect of it Joan, but obviously that is everything after 1837. The census is very good for searching mispelt names. Also it is useful when having found someone on a census to go walkabout down the roads/streets to see who lived close by, you can find family groups that way.

Hi Ross,
From the Lancashirebmd site is a marriage of John Lancaster to Ann Driver 1872 at St Bartholomew's Colne and from the BVRI discs there is this entry
PARKER, Benjamin Age: 28 Marriage
Wife: Jane DRIVER Age: 23
Marriage Date: 23 Dec 1871 Recorded in: Colne, Lancashire, England
Collection: Christ Church
Husband's Father: Benjamin PARKER
Wife's Father: John DRIVER
Source: FHL Film 1471023 Dates: 1843 - 1900
From this is I think you would be looking for Ann Driver daughter of John on the 1871 census, there is an entry for a matching family living at Back Lane Colne

John aged 44 b Foulridge
Prisciilla age 44 b Foulridge
Michael aged 11
JAmes aged 7
John aged 4
Jane aged 22
Ann aged 18
Barbra aged aged 16
all children born at Colne

Fantastic work, Folks!

I know these are correct! Seeing them triggers memories (ever so faint now) of things I heard as a boy from my grandfather (William Lancaster) and his sister (Maud).

I knew there were farming family members, though our immediate family were weavers.

As a boy I went with my great-auntie Maud to visit family in Colne, of course I had no idea who I was meeting.

They had an "Uncle Mick" who I thought must have been "Michael Lancaster" ... but here is the Driver family with a Michael who would have been my grandfather's "Great Uncle Mick".

Now, Michael Driver must have eventually had a farm of some kind and perhaps he did not have sons. My grandfather always thought the farm might come to him and was horribly disappointed when it didn't. In any case, the farm land was taken by the British Government for military purposes (I seem to recall).

Does Michael Driver show in 1891 or 1901?

Richard Lancaster, killed WWI ... Maybe not a near relative, but I've noted the name. My grandfather's brother, James Arthur Lancaster, is the one you've shown. I've seen that on the CWG website. Killed just weeks before the Armistice. I have thought I might go and visit the grave if health and wealth permitted it.

Many thanks for your ongoing help!

Can you buy (online) blank forms for hand-writing out "family trees". I lived in Utah 1992-95 and recall seeing them in the LDS bookstore (Deseret), should have bought some!

ROSS

According to Lancashire bmd, a Michael Driver died 1900, aged 41 - Registration District Burnley East. This is almost certainly him.

Gloria, thanks for your input about Ancestry UK. I used to have easy access to Ancestry until about a year ago at the LDS library where I'm a volunteer. This Centre doesn't have it anymore.

I've had useful information from Findmypast: passenger lists, and especially, the Index to Death Duty Registers. I don't have a subscription but buy units as I need them.

This is from the 1851 census. I spotted it whist looking at something else and found that the names have all been transcribed as "Voocter". Maybe someone's looking for them?

HO107; Piece: 2251; Folio: 104; Page: 14
Haggate, Briercliffe
John Proctor, head 46
Alice Proctor wife 46
All the rest are sons and daughters:
Ann Proctor 20
Ellen Proctor 16
Henry Proctor 17
Sarah Proctor 14
James Proctor 11
Mary Proctor 8
The whole family are shown as born in Briercliffe.
Sorry I haven't time to transcribe it fully just now, but if you're looking for these people that's where they are.
