continuing my exploration of the Society's excellent website, I had a look at the Census pages and in particular the Nutters listed there. As my own gt-gt-g'parents were a Bannister and a Nutter, I was fascinated to find three Nutter males (b ca !816, 1842 and 1844) who had the first name Bannister.

Can anyone cast light on this? Presumably any connection dates from very early in the 19th Century. I do realise that there is no shortage of Bannisters in the Burnley-Colne area!

Continuing from my last message, I was interested to find, in Gloria's list of Nutter marriages, records of male Nutters marrying female Bannisters in 1740 and 1773 - and a Bannister Nutter marrying a Mary Bentley in 1785. Many thanks for your contribution, Gloria.

I’m very grateful to Annie for making her Nutter tree available to us all.

I understand (on what I believe is good authority) that my my gt-gt-g’parents were Henry Bannister b about 1812 and Alice Nutter, and that they were married at St Peter’s Burnley. Their eldest child, my gt-g’father William Bannister, was born 1835.

In the 1841 Census, Henry and Alice, both recorded as aged 25 and born in Lancs, are living at Lane Head, Burnley with two of their children, Daniel 4 and Margaret 1. William is not found. Henry is a labourer and Alice is a weaver. In 1851, Alice is a widow aged 33, born Briercliffe and a hand loom weaver, still living at Lane Head. William 16, Daniel 14 and Margaret 12 plus two other children (the youngest is 10 months), are living with her, and I feel the children’s names and ages are reasonable corroboration that these two records refer to the same Alice. I have not found her in later Censuses, nor a death record, but there is a death record for a Henry Bannister in Q1 1851 in Burnley.

I should like to believe that this Alice is the same as Annie’s Alice, but her recorded ages are a problem if Annie’s dob for her (21 Feb 1819) is correct for her birth. But is this perhaps a baptism date? I see that the dates Annie mentioned in her post of 10 Apr 07 were baptisms. By the way, although Henry was born 1812, he was not baptised until 1820.

Hi Charon
I got the birthdate from Haggate records on this site.
I was pleased to add my tree to the site BUT I must say that I have no provenance for John Nutter's b. 1816 parents - John Nutter & Sarah Spencer. So if anyone spots any errors - I would be extremely grateful.
Annie

Hi Annie

many thanks again. It's a bit disappointing that it looks as if your Annie isn't the same as mine - but that's genealogy........

I'm very grateful to Annie for providing the Nutter records. I've increased my confidence that I have the right Alice Nutter for my 2G g'mother (who married Henry Bannister) born 3 April 1818 and I'm delighted to have found her parents, my Nutter 3G grandparents, Daniel and Isabella (Airton, from the IGI record of their marriage on 12 Dec 1813 in Burnley) as well as two more of their children.

Do we know of anyone who has traced their descent back to Alice Nutter the Lancashire Witch? I could do with someone a bit different in my tree!

I look at this site almost every day, and I've learnt a lot about this part of my heritage. I'd like to thank Mel for all her work on the site, and to offer my warm congratulations on her anniversary and best wishes for many more.

Not me! I think plenty of my Nutters had a broomstick but not Alice in the right time frame! lol
I echo the sentiment for Mel - excellent site!
