The article is about the death, in her 98th year, of Nelson's oldest resident. It tells how she had lived all her life in Nelson, was born Mary Varley in 1819 and was a twin. Her husband had died about 60 years before her. The remainder of the article is mostly a list of mourners and floral tributes. This is what I THINK is her family: Edmund Varley b about 1781 Colne Baptised 8/7/1781, Newchurch in Pendle; parents William Varley & Ellen (Ellin) Riley Married Mary Chadwick 25/12/1806 Child Henry Varley b 27/2/1807, Baptised 29/3/1807 Marsden, Colne 1841 census Catlow Row Little Marsden Edmund 1781 Mary 1791 Mary & Martha 1819 John 1821 James 1823 Maria 1825 Sarah 1828 Nancy 1840 (11 months) Elizabeth 1841 (9 months) Mary Varley m John Nutter 1842 bmd index Burnley 12/1842 21 p138 Martha Varley m Henry Dixon 1843 Bmd index Burnley 6/1843 21 p106 1851 census Bowling Row Gt Marsden John Nutter 32 Mary Nutter (wife) 32 Children Margaret 8 months Nancy 10 Richard 4 Susannah 2 Sarah Ann 5 1861 census Bowling Row Gt Marsden Mary Nutter (widow) 42 Children Margaret 10 Richard 14 Susannah 12 Sarah 15 John 7 1851 census Meeting House Little Marsden Henry Dixon 30 Martha Dixon (wife) 32 Children Elizabeth 10 John 5 By 1871 Martha is widowed, but has a niece (Ann Varley) living with her, which confirms that this is the same Martha as shown on the 1841 census. I think it's fairly conclusive then that the lady in the article was the daughter of Edmund. No use to you then Annie? |

Thanks very much for that Portia! True that it isn't the same Mary as mine but nevertheless it's worth having. You never know what other links will turn up with these Nutters! Thanks again. Annie |

I will if I can find it, but it might be on my desk at work. I know I have it somewhere (it's probably with my marbles which I lose on a regular basis) |

Post subject: | John Nutter, born Briercliffe abt 1816 |
Does anyone have this man in their tree, and if so, do you know the maiden name of his wife, Olive? On the 1841 census he's living at Lane House, Briercliffe with his wife and 2 Leaver children aged 2 & 15. In 1851 he's at the Mill, Briercliffe with Olive, 3 children - Bunister (Bannister), Robert and Ann. One of the Leaver children is still there, described as a lodger. We have an Olive Leaver, born 20/8/1816 and I wondered whether it might be the same person, bearing in mind the 2 Leaver children living with her and the fact that her eldest son has the same name (Bannister) as Olive Leaver's father and brother. |

Looked everywhere I can think of and cannot find a marriage----you are going to have to trawl through parish registers. I would think it is odds on that it is Olive Leaver as everything points that way. I can only find three Olives married in Burnley before 1843, and none before 1841, so I would presume they married before that. Unusual not to have had children before they did though. |
