Not quite Briercliffe, more Burnley Lane, this query.

There is a lane runs down the side of the General hospital from Casterton Ave, to Rakehead rec and on down to near Queensgate. When I lived on Casterton in the 40s and 50s it was more evident (restructuring of the hosptal site makes it less apparent now, at least off Casterton). We simply called it 'the ginnel'. Way back it continued I think northward up the line of Thames Ave, and up to New Ground Top on Marsden Rd.

Does anyone have a name for this lane, I never knew one. I did on a previous enquiry (on the ogfbarlick site I think) have a response calling it 'Dukes Lane', perhaps because it led in the direction of the Duke of York at Duke Bar.

Whilst we are on placenames, why 'Queensgate' ? Did Victoria come this way ?!

I remember this post on ogfb and added my fourpenneth, sadly I cannot add any more. I have looked on the web at the Lancashire records office maps but they don't help.
The path can be seen still coming out on Casterton Avenue but most of it has been widened and altered by the hospital.

The direction can be followed down pretty much to Colne Rd, but it now appears to be more of a thoroughfare for hospital vehicle traffic than a ginnel.
I hope this may jog someones memory into the name for it.

Rex, have you contacted Burnley Library? Well worth an e-mail if not.

I lived off Casterton Avenue in the 50s and most of the 60s and the lane in question was only ever known to us as the Recory Lane because it led to Rakehead Recory. The times I have walked down there to the Tivoli Cinema oh what happy memories. There used to be allotments there and I often bought my Mum a bunch of Calandulas for a few pennies for Mother's Day. As you say it is now part of BGH with a narrow path leading to Peart St etc.

Oh that rec, I've still got grit in my knees from playing football !

I also got concussed once there in a kickabout. Nobody bothered, the game itself too important ! I woke up eventually. Never told my parents.

I remember the "Tiv", and wasn't it Cee-Cee's icecream across the road, lovely stuff.

I remember cee cee's ice cream, delicious, I remember it having tiny crystals of ice in it, they also sold it from a handcart going round the street's, he had a handbell and shouted Cee Cee Cee's ices. :)

I've never had icecream like it ----- it was lovely. Wonder what ever happened to them. We moved away in 1957 and I think they were gone when we came back in 1963.

Oh yes Mmmmmmmmmm that lovely ice cream, and does anyone remember the fruit shop on the opposite side? (corner of Murray St), we used to buy a !d worth of cut fruit there to take to the Saturday afternoon matinees. Then later on it was where we went to do our teenage "courting".
Rex I have watched many a football game on the Rec, simply for the purposeof learning about the game of course.
Have a good weekend
