Hello to all.....first posting. Very pleased to have found a resource as well organised as this.

I wonder if anyone can shed any light on the fact that my paternal grandfather's mother, Sarah Whitehead (nee Mathers, I believe) was buried in an Edmondson grave at Haggate.

My grandfather, Albert Whitehead, was born in Briercliffe in 1912. Sadly, his mother, Sarah, died from what I assume were childbirth complications on Christmas Eve of that year.

I have a photograph of my grandfather next to a grave at Haggate, taken sometime between 1992-94. The inscription relating to Sarah, wife of John W. Whitehead is on the plinth supporting the main stone, which carries the names:

Brierley Edmondson, of 40 Queen St, Briercliffe, died Oct 7th 1912 in his 69th year
His wife, Susan, died April 9th 1902 in her 56th(?) year

James Edmondson, son of the above, died March 27th 1960 in his 88th year
Grace Ann, his beloved wife, died July 27th 1949 in her 70th year

Sarah Spencer, died June 8th 1898, in her 27th year

In the photo I have the details of James and Grace Ann seemed to have been relatively recently re-gilded, and so I was hoping that there may be some Edmondsons, still in the locality, that may have some information to flesh out my very limited knowledge.

Hi Mark, I have got their marriage details, which in case you haven't got them would give Sarah's father's name. I will look for her in the 1901 census to see if anything shows up. Let me know if you have already gone down this path.

Cannot find any Mathers in area around Burnley in 1901 census, the only Sarah of the right age is in Bacup where it says she is a visitor, and born in Bacup.
This is the only John W Whitehead I could find in Burnley and he is "nephew".

Think I need to focus on the Edmondson connection and see if there are any current Edmondsons in Briercliffe that are descended from Brierley/James
