Hi

does anyone know how I could find out who ran a fish & chip shop on Hammerton Street, burnley after 1894. My gt grandfather owned the shop until that time but would love to know who took over the shop for the next 20/30 years

It might be worth contacting Burnley Library, they could point you in the right direction.

The "General & Commercial Directory of Burnley, Nelson ..., 1896 ", which is available on line at
http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/d.asp , lists three "fried fish dealers" in Hammerton St: John Cousins at number 57, John Sagar at 63, and John Wm Taylor in the street but no number given. I hope one of those addresses is the right one for you.

The Histrorical Directories site is a very useful resource, well worth exploring.

Sorry, the link I posted doesn't seem to work from here although it works for me (from my Favorites). Try http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/ which says it's a revamped version, or just Google "Historical Directories"
