Say your wife died in 1862. What determines the place she is buried? besides the obvious ...Religion
Are you buried in your family plot, the family you married into plot, anywhere your husband fancies?
Help me with some ideas here so I can look for Sarah Shackleton in some places i haven't thought of!
Any ideas gratefully considered!

Are unmarked graves recorded in Church records?

I would go with the 'where your husband fancies' choice. My Gt gt grandfather was not where I expected him to be and his wife was not buried with him 12 years later and she did not remarry.

They just like to keep the research interesting :shock:

Probably answered this one before, but when did cremation start?

The first working crematorium was built at Woking, Surrey in 1879 and was used a few times a year from 1885. In 1902 Parliament passed the Cremation Act, which both formally recognised the practice and legalised its use.
Cremations per year in Britain;
1885- 3
1886- 10
1887- 13
1912- over 1000
1936- 10,000
1968- over half of the deaths.
2001- 70% of deaths.

A cheery little subject. :wink:
