I have one marriage..... Christopher Sutcliffe Spouse: Jenney Banister Marriage: 01 OCT 1796 St Bartholomew'S, Colne, Lancashire, England I have two contenders for the groom.... CHRIS SUTCLIFFE Christening: 11 SEP 1774 Colne, Lancashire, England Father: CHRISTOPHER SUTCLIFFE Family Mother: ELLIN CHRISTOPHER SUTCLIFFE Birth: 14 JAN 1782 Particular Baptist, Colne, Lancashire, England Father: JOSEPH SUTCLIFFE Family Mother: NANCY Any suggestions on how I figure out which is the correct groom other than gut instinct? (Gut instinct being the older one of the two) |

Mel, The only thing I can think of is that the oldest one Chris Sutcliffe is probably the correct one, because St Bartholemews Church in Colne is a C of E Church. The other Christopher Sutcliffe, the younger one, appears to be a Baptist, so that gives me a feeling that a Baptist would'nt have married in a C of E church. That is the only thing I can come up with, hope you can fathom out what I am getting at.  Stephanie. |

Mel, my gut instinct is also the eldest, as the youngest would have been only 14 at time of marriage. Did they marry that young? |

Thanks both for your thoughts.... my gut instinct is the older one...however, it was legal to marry at 14 years of age up until the early 1900's though I would not have thought it very common. With regards to the religion, according to Hardiwickes Marriage Act viewtopic.php?f=16&t=1695 meant that a marriage had to be performed in the Parish Church. Unless the Baptist Chapel was a designated Chapel, the marriage would have taken place at St Bartholomews anyway. Why couldn't they just put a fathers name and save all of this confusion!! |

Speechless  only 90 years ago!Youngest I've found so far is my 3 x Gt. Grandfather Henry Sutcliffe at 16 year 4 months. |

No clues from the marriage. Was working on this last night. It all started with the Doreen Crowther stuff. I had previously matched the marriage to the younger Christopher as I was not aware of the older one but, (just as we were saying yesterday!) I didn't want to assume that either mine or Doreens was the correct one. Doreen didn't give the surname of the mother, only that she was Ellen. I have found a marriage now for Christopher Sutcliffe and Ellen Howorth and a deceased child for Christopher and Jane called Haworth. Does that seal it as the younger one... Doreen's collection is a fantastic resource but there were quite a few names or dates with no source or using Doreens abbreviations, usually the initials, of the source which is OK if the source is obvious! |

Now I'm even more confuddled. Where do Christopher & Jane come into it? Is that Jenney? Also if it was Ellen who was a Howarth, I would have expected Howarth Sutcliffe to belong to her, not Jane.

Sorry! Jenney is Jane. I have a census return for her that lists her as Jane. Christopher and Jenny/Jane have a son called Howorth. |

Is this how it goes? Christopher Sutcliffe marries Ellen Haworth They have a son Chistopher, around 1774 He marries Jenney/ Jane Banister in 1796 They have a child Howorth Sutcliffe If so, there's also an Ellen on the 1841 census with Jane, which reinforces the theory that the groom you want is Christopher 1774. Is it the same Jane who appears on 1851 at 4 Finsley Gate? If so, it get more confusinf as she's living with a Howarth family and described as 'mother'. Unless it should say mother-in-law. Yes thats the family. Nancy is the youngest daughter of Christopher and Jane/Jenney. The neice at that address is the daughter of Jane/Jenney's son....yet another Christopher!!! I can put this one on the back burner now until I find a father for the oldest Christopher who married Ellen Howorth as it does not actually connect into my tree....who knows though once his father puts in an appearance!! |
