My 3 x Gt. Grandfather on the 1881 and 1891 census was down as author and journalist. Anyone any ideas where to start on this one? Would love to know what he did.

Have you found his obituary? Maybe his journalist career is mentioned.

A local newspaper journalist perhaps? Have you googled his name?

I tried google but didn't get any of what seemed good leads. Trouble is his name is quite common, James Barnes born 1839 Newton Heath, Manchester, and trying to track down his death has come to nothing at the moment, can't even find him 1901.

James Barnes, journalist who covered the Transvaal war.

I think this guy is younger than your man....but maybe your man was covering the war in SA and that is why you cannot find him in 1901.
