Can anyone tell me please, was Duke Bar a pub or a small area near to Briercliffe?

Duke Bar is an area about halfway between Lane Head and Burnley. There is a pub called the Duke of York on what is now a type of island where the road splits. One road going on to Brierfield and Nelson, the other up to Lane Head and beyond.

I have a postcard with 'Old Duke Bar' written across the bottom and the building on it says 'Hebrew Road Bar'.
I've put it on the site although I don't suppose it is really Briercliffe

The Hebrew Road Bar is now the Duke of York pub. How interesting to see the gates on either side of it.

Was it a toll road?
Do you know how/why Hebrew Road got it's name, was there a jewish influence in the area?

The Duke of York Pub is the one that got firebombed in the Burnley riots.

Colne rd was an 18th century turnpike road, and as such would have tollbars, including Duke Bar or Hebrew Bar. Details are in Bennett.

There was a Hebrew Hall farm, from which it is likely the road was named (Bennett again). It only had a small amount of land, despite what sounds a rather grand name. It is described only as a cottage in one 19c reference (see A2A - Access to Archives - website)

But why 'Hebrew' remains a mystery, I don't think that Burnley in early days is likely to have had any Jewish inhabitants.

When I was a kid (1950s) to walk up Hebrew Rd, say from its junction with Daneshouse Rd, felt like an adventure, being narrow, and with old houses !

Rex, so that means Queens Gate would have been a toll gate also probably. Bet there are loads more which come to mind.

But '..gate' generally doesn't mean 'gate' (!), it just means 'way' or 'road', e.g. in Burnley, Westgate, Sandygate, Finsleygate, Eastgate (now Yorkshire St). Etc.
