Does anyone know why a couple would get married by licence in 1795 and not by Banns?

Not sure Mel, where was it?
I have an odd one with a few Kippaxs, they were baptised by the Hillgate Tabernacle, Stockport, and it was done in Haggate. Wonder if it is something like that. I thought in the long, dark and distant past it was all banns.

It is the William Sutcliffe and Sarah Heap marriage on the marriages thread. (Sutcliffe topic). The marriage took place at St Peters in Burnley.
William and Sarah are my 4x Gt Grandparents.

Marriage by licence was perhaps commoner for widows and widowers. Generally it would avoid the 'public' nature of the reading of the banns, three times. I think it might sometimes have been used when the bride didn't belong to the parish (and maybe the groom didn't either).

Thats interesting Rex.
They were both of the Parish. Not sure if either were widowed though. It doesn't say so on the marriage but it doesn't mean they weren't.
Something to look for!

This is an old subject I know, but maybe you still want an answer..
Marriage by licence can be quicker - my own parents were married by licence because there was a mistake with my mother's name with the banns and the vicar couldn't issue a certificate. there wasn't time to re-read the banns, hence the licence.
Sometimes a quick marriage might be wanted, eg if one of the parties were on their deathbed or about to go into labour with an illegitimate child!

Mel
Since I posted my message earlier this evening I've looked at the site for the Lambeth Palace library which gives more information about why licences were issued and how/ where you can get copies of them.

Thanks Portia. It was just one of those things I have spotted time and again and never known the reason why.
The Lambeth Palace link is interesting. I will root further on that site when I am home.
