Knew I'd seen Betty somewhere.

The James Kippax 1719 is "I THINK " and am "PRETTY SURE" my 5Xgt grandfather who died 1769. By process of elimination and because I cannot find anyone else who could be him.
Robert, his brother (I think), is Stephen's ancestor.
Both I am 99% sure are the sons of-- Edward illegimate son of Edward Kippax and Grace Sympson.
I also believe those other children are all their siblings.
So, the illegitimate Edward married Betty Skelton?
James (1719) and his wife had a daughter named Elizabeth-fact.
Robert and Ellen both go down the family line from James-fact.

Just really thinking this aloud, blame Stephen, he has got me back at it again.

No, the marriage to Betty Skelton was a Robert Kippax I think

Mel, I think the Betty Skelton marriage to Robert Kippax was 6-1-1756, taken from Colne Registers.
Found my bit of info
Marriage of Edward Kippax (born 1696) to Betty from Family Group Sheet
Can anyone shed any light on this, I found it pre 2006 and that is all the info I had written down, unless in the depths of my scribblings I find any more. I do so wish I had organised myself better then.

Yes Gloria...that was the one (1756) I looked at.

"According to the BVRI discs, the baptism date is correct and took place at Colne. Mothers name is not given. There are 6 baptisms with father named as Edward Kippax on my discs dating from 1719 to 1729. They are"

Mel, I'll assume that the person quoting the BVRI got it wrong, then. She's obviously confused the 'mother' with the 'future spouse' somehow...

Gloria,

That's right. Robert Kippax and Betty Skelton are my Greatx5 Grandparents. Can't find any info for Betty though, regarding birth or death.

My one problem re: Robert's lineage however, is this; is he:

1720: Robert (born to Edward of Little Marsden)
or
1725: Robert (born to Edward of Great Marsden). Note the change from Little Marsden to Great Marsden. Are we assuming the earlier Robert died and this is the 'replacement', or do we want to guess at a whole different family? My thinking is that it's the same family, which makes this Robert my ancestor.

It requires us to query whether there's two Edwards having kids at this time, or just the one.

Same family I think, been down this route before and looked for the death of the first Robert but never found one.
Stephen, did you manage to open the spreadsheet?

Post subject:  Re: Edward Kippax

Re: the death of the first Robert, I suspect one would need to look through the original registers and see if any entries look as if they're missing or are illegible for the relevant periods.

I haven't managed to open that document, no. I don't have the software to do so, unfortunately. I only have Excel for Spreadsheets on this machine. I have scanned through the text form of what you sent me though, but haven't yet had time to do anything with it...

Stephen I have looked through the originals and not been able to find it. I looked at St Bartholomews Colne and St Peters Burnley. St Peter's in particular has some damage for around that time.

The original fiches, or the actual original books? I've found the fiches almost impossible to get through, I must admit.

Fiches and films Stephen. Some of the early ones are very bad.

I'm very impressed you made it through them, then. I had very little idea where to begin as I just couldn't get to grips with trying to make out what I was reading! If memory serves, there is a gap in the Parish transcription books that is filled only with fiches. Not sure which local church this gap falls into, though...

Hi hoping you can help me, I've been reading the posts regarding Edward Kippax, I'd got back through to James 1719 with the help of Gloria a few years ago, so now trying to make the next step when I spotted this, I dip in and out due to work & kids and unfortunately live on North East Coast so can't travel easily to the area (leaving that until I retire!)

I think this is the trail using your posts regarding Edward :

Starts with my sons GT Grandfather

11. John Hartley Hindle Kippax B Dec 1895 – Married – 1828 Margaret Ann Crabtree

10. Wilson Kippax B March 1873 – Married – Charlotte Hindle

9. John Kippax B March 1853 – Married Ann Bannister

8. Wilson Kippax B 1822 – Married 20/5/1850 Ellen Emmett (nee Heys)

7. John Kippax B 18/3/1804 – Married Mary Edmundson

6. Joshua Kippax B 1769 – Married 12/2/1797 Sarah (Sally Jackson)

5. James Kippax B 1719 – Married 28/6/1760 Susan Nutter

4. Edward Kippax B1696 (Illegitimate)

3. Edward Kippax B 1652 – Mother to Edward B 1696 Grace Sympson

2. Edward Kippax B 1606 – Married Ellen Wilson 12th September 1632

1. John Kippax B 1578 – Married June 1602 Jeneta Hargreaves

Can you give me a helping hand to say whether I have got it right.. as I got a little confused trying to work my way through the chain.... funnily enough my Husband 1st Son was called Edward..

kind regard, Jackie

Jackie,

Nice to meet your acquintance, being the distant cousin that you (probably) are!

Your suppositions all look good to me. It's also made me realise that I made a terrible error with my earlier piece; I neglected to include the 1652 Edward in my calculations. Argh! Will have to rejig this as soon as possible...

Btw: your 1578 John Kippax birth is also a bit of a shocker. Where on Earth does that come from...? I'm intrigued...!

Hi Stephen

Ancestry site :

Lancashire, England, Extracted Parish Records
about Johes Kepas Jeneta Hargreaves
Text: Johes Kepas et Jeneta Hargreaves 01 Jun 1602
Book: Nupti Maio. (Marriage)
Collection: Lancashire: Colne - Parish Register, 1599-1653

I've seen this spelling of Kippax several time so was hoping I was correct and one of you guys with the better knowledge may have been able to confirm.

I also found an alternative date Colne Chapelry, Whalley, Lancashire, England alternative date 24 June and wondered is one was Banns (or equiv in those days) and one actual marriage.

So it may be a leap of faith or fantasy. But thought worth introducing.

regards, Jackie
