In 1860 would there have been ANY place where a Fathers name would have had to have been recorded other than on a Birth certificate?
It has been suggested that I try Bishops Transcripts or Parish Registers.
If these are a possibility then how would I go about obtaining them?

My search is for: (from copy of birth Cert)
In the sub-district of Colne, County of Lancaster
1st column 355
John GREENWOOD
b.14 March 1860 Lower Clough Head Marsden
Mother: Sarah Greenwood

Not sure what the number 355 in the first column is telling me?
The Birth Certificate I have is a copy transcribed in 1963.
I would be most grateful for any help.

Glenys

Sorry Glenys, don't know of one. They didn't HAVE to be recorded on the birth cert, only if the father was willing to be present, or sign documentation stating he was the father.

Colne Library may have copies of the relevant registers : St Bartholomews or Christ Church if Anglican, but of course by this time could be one of a number of nonconformist chapels. Unlikely to be Bishops Transcripts this late.

Thanks Gloria and Rex .. i was afraid you were going to tell me that!
I am descended from a Gentleman who was born out of wedlock or so it would appear ... I was hoping there was somewhere where privately the fathers name would have been recorded.
I will keep looking but it seems it would be a long shot that I will find anything now

The trouble is that no matter how sure you are as to who the father is, unless the name is there on the cert or in the register it is not written in stone. If there was somewhere, she could put any name down as the father. Sorry, but in these instances, only the mother will know. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt, the video, the lot-----not a happy bunny.

Yes it looks like i may have the T shirt too ! But this bunny will keep looking :)
I'm sending away (from the Lanc. BDMs) for the marriage certificate of John Greenwood and Ellen Burrows which MIGHT state the Fathers name... you never know. His Mother ( Sarah Greenwood) stated her own father as a one James Whitaker on her marriage cert!

What do you think about this?

I was just in the shower! and it came to me that perhaps the Birth certificate could have been transcribed incorrectly.
The Certified Copy I have was made in 1963 from Somerset House SO this is not a photocopy say of the original but is a copy made by someones hand.
If I send away for the certificate now will i get a true copy of the certificate?

Clutching at straws!!
Glenys

I have never recieved a photocopy----sorry.
Just a thought, but why don't you contact Preston records office (E-mail) and see what they suggest, you have the date of birth so some kind bod might have a suggestion or even do a quick look. Anything is worth a try, and they will have come across this a lot.
