Morning,

I am currently researching my family tree in Briercliffe and would like to ask if anyone knows which software is best to create a tree both online and offline. I have looked at the ancestry.co.uk Platinum and the Rootsmagic Platinum. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My Great Grandfather was Spendlove Mills and lived in Lanebottom until his death in 1971.

Thanks

Andrew.

Hi Andrew,
I have mine on a PAF downloaded from www.familysearch.org I have also got it on Family Tree Maker but prefer the PAF. I haven't go it anywhere offline except the partial ones I have on here.

Hi Andrew, Spendlove is in my tree! His mother, Sarah Sutcliffe, was the sister of my Gt Gt Grandmother Betty Sutcliffe. Please tell me there are not two Spendlove Mills!!
I am also in contact with a lady in Australia who descends from your line (assuming there is only 1 of the above!)

Back to your initial query - I also swear by PAF. It's free, easy to use and you don't need to be online to access your info.

Hi all,

Thanks for the advice, I've downloaded the PAF that Gloria and Mel suggested. Just the job.

Mel, There is only one Spendlove Mills I know of, which is good. The person who left that thread about Spendlove years ago was my dad Mike.

Can you let me know who the person in Oz is related to?

Andrew

She descends from Spendloves older sister Mary Ann.
I can put you in touch if you like. I think the email address I have is still current.

Hi Mel,

It would be really interesting to chat to her. If you could give her my email address that would be great.

Thanks

Andrew

Apologies for the delay. I changed my computer a few months back and because of this, I have had difficulty finding Mary's email address.

I have now emailed her.

Hi Mel,

I've been in contact with Mary who is a mine of fantastic insight. I've found out origins of family names and all sorts.

Thanks so much.

Andrew

Just thought I'd pop my two penn'orth in here - Sarah Sutcliffe's first husband was my Gt-Gt Uncle Richard HARGREAVES (c 1848-1882). She and Richard were married in 1872 (had 5 children, including Dyson Sutcliffe - assumed Richard's son - born before they were married), and after Richard's death she married again to Sander Davis MILLS in 1888 - (three other children) and Spendlove was born in 1896!

I've not visited these Briercliffe boards for such a long time - but glad to see that Mel is still posting - hi Mel - your distant rellie Alison here!!

I've also been in touch with Mary in the past - and I think it was here who "introduced" me to these boards (it seems such a long time ago).

Andrew - did Mary give you any pointers/theories on where the name Spendlove might have come from...?

Cheers! Alison Smith (nee Hargreaves), Swindon, UK

Hi Alison,

Sorry it took so long for me to reply to your post.

The name Spendlove comes from a marriage between Sanders Davis and his second wife Jane Elizabeth Spendlove in 1865 in Gretton Norhamps. According to Mary in Oz, Jane was from a wealthy farming family and they called their first born Sanders Spendlove Davis and so the name was used as a christian name for my Great Grandfather Spendlove.

Thanks

Andrew.
