If I have - as I do - lots of information culled from street directories, then what year should I be affixing it to?

i.e. if I have information on someone's address in either the 1922 Gore or Kelly Directory, then is that where they were living up to the end of 1922 (i.e. the directory is published 1st Jan 1923 and the '1922' date refers to the previous year) or is it where they were living during 1921 (and the directory's date refers to the publishing year, but the information refers to the previous year)...?
