I have info on closure of the Albert Shed but nothing else .It was situated in Canning Street Near the Culvet and Stoneyholme District.My GG GRandfather William Knapton Fulton is listed along with a Mr Slater as owners or leaseholders of the said Mill .Time frame about 1870 to 1890s The Burnley Express ran an article when it Closed in 1933.Any info would be helpful. William Slater (b. c.1833) was the brother of my ancestor Susannah Hargreaves. He was a baker, then like Fulton became a butcher, until they formed a partnership and went into cotton manufacturing, starting in Albert Shed about 1871. They were there for a very short time, relocating to Spring Garden Shed by 1873. They dissolved their partnership in 1882, Slater taking over the whole of the business and he moved it to Ashfield Shed in 1891. Slater retired in 1903, leaving his sons to run the business.

I would dearly like photos of Albert Shed and Spring Garden Shed, if any exist.

I attach my notes on William Slater, some of which will be of interest to you.

Although not directly about Albert Shed, you may be interested to browse through the Minute Books of the Calf Hall Shed Company in Barnoldswick, which are posted on the oneguyfrombarlick website.

Edward Midgley (my grandfather) & Sons were tenants of Wellhouse Mill (1940 to 1960), which was owned by CHSC, which is how I came across this extraordinarily detailed resource for people interested in the Lancashire cotton industry.

The Minute Books (from 1889 to the 1960s) contain a lot of mundane adminstrative detail (concerns about tenancies, rents, repairs, insurance etc) but there is also information about the state of the cotton trade and working in a mill, especially in the earlier period. The transcriber, Stanley Challenger Graham, has added many interesting asides and clarifications in square brackets. Searching for opening square brackets is a quick way to find them!

The frontage of Ashfield Mill (1861) still exists. I have a photo of this if it helps.

Last time I visited the site of Ashfield Mill in 2005, the main block and weaving sheds had been demolished and only the engine house, the boiler house and chimney, and an adjacent wall, all next to the railway viaduct, were standing. I'm not even sure now that these belonged to Ashfield, as I've seen a map showing Calder Vale Mill north of and distinct from Ashfield Mill. Slater may have combined them - I know that Slater had 900 looms and I've got to work out the floor area needed for them and match that to the map. It's amazing what side-roads genealogy takes you down !

Wonderful !

It's very strange that I've never seen the frontage before - I've visited the Ashfield Mill site at least six times in the last 40 years, but wasn't looking in the right place.


10.7.2014. I have now carefully worked out that this frontage is new - it stands on the site of the three-storey block pictured earlier and standing in 1983 - and thus must have been built in the last 30 years. No wonder I hadn't seen it before. Nice traditional design though, and the plaque must be reused.

This may have been the building you were referring to. I don't know much about these old mills but I can remember my father working here as a tackler in the 1950s. At that time it belonged to "Brindle's". It was only a relatively small outfit.
