Is anyone watching Downton Abbey?
In last Sundays programme, the housekeeper was asked if she had married because she used the title 'Mrs'. She said no, all housekeepers are referred to as Mrs. Was this true?

Mel I have read that Cooks/Housekeepers were given the title as a courtesy, think the same may have applied to single mothers in days gone by. When I worked as a Ward Clerk I used to call all Mum's Mrs so and so, thinking I was being considerate and sensitive. Then one of the Midwives said I should not do that because I might offend the patient. Can't win.

It makes me wonder now if any of my lot appear on the census as Mrs when they were really spinsters?
