Has anyone heard of a man named Red Ban? He lived at Haggate/ Harl Syke probably late 1800's - early 1900's.

My grandmother described him as being 'a bit of a wrong un', She said that he was connected to her Sutcliffe line but did not know how. I am curious to know more about him.

Sorry that's a new one on me, obviously a nickname but never heard it before.

Me neither.

I wonder if there is anything in the papers of the time or if he was just locally infamous? I'll drop Roger a line to see if he has heard of him.

I think I may have got him---my grandfather is Th'Owd Syker and he knew and wrote about a lot of the characters "up Syke". I have been through his ramblings on the home page and came across this---

Ginger Dan (Halstead):
The owner of the School kids' Tuck shop; inventor of the "Lucky Bag". made 200 every Thursday night and sold them by lunchtime Friday. Also invented the "Long Drop Hook", which he would loan you if you had "dropped summat dairn petty".
Was no good for retrieving false teeth - you had to borrow Owd Whipp's ferret for that.
Funnily enough, I have just spoken about this article to Dan's daughter, Mrs Redman - who said one person from Cross Street used to come and say "Dan, can I borrow your stabber?" when she had a disaster.

Red Ban I think is Ginger Dan
