Headstone
Nancy Taylor May 28th 1914 aged 84 years
Mary Ellen, daughter and wife of John Greenwood March 29th 1929 aged 61 years

My question is : the above means that John Greenwood had a daughter and wife buried in this plot and that they both shared the name Mary Ellen ... would that be correct? it then goes on to state the death date of the Wife only? I'm not sure about this ...can anyone translate?

Glenys I think this means daughter of Nancy Taylor and the wife of John Greenwood, 1 person..Mary Ellen.

I think this may be MY John Greenwood (John Shackleton)! He could not have been buried as John Shackleton because he was born John Greenwood and married Ellen as John Greenwood. Only little discepancy is the name Mary Ellen. John married Ellen (nee Burrows) ..her mother was Mary Taylor but her father was James Burrows ...so i'm hoping that Mary and Ellen and Nancy are 3 different people! phew.
Mel if you are ever going past that headstone then i would be VERY grateful for the inscription.

I plan to have them all eventually Glenys! I hope it is still standing and in reasonable condition for you.

Why not email Burnley library (or visit, I can't remember where you are?) and ask if they have the burials records. Give them the dates from the MI's to see what detail (if any) is in the burials. It is a more recent death so should hopefully say slightly more than the earlier ones.
